Max Cady is released from prison after serving fourteen years behind bars. During his time inside, he studied law and concluded that the man most responsible for his conviction was Sam Bowden, the lawyer assigned to defend him. Sam now lives in a newly built house in a quiet town in North Carolina with his wife, Leigh, and their teenage daughter, Danielle. On the outside, the family seems to have everything in order. Cady, on the other hand, is in no hurry and moves patiently, looking for a way to get close to the Bowdens. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film stars Robert De Niro as Cady and Nick Nolte as Sam in a thriller that begins with a threat nobody quite takes seriously.

Trivia about Cape Fear

Steven Spielberg originally developed the project but ultimately found the film too violent. He traded it to Scorsese in exchange for Schindler's List, which Scorsese had decided not to make.

Cape Fear became Scorsese's first movie to pass the 100 million dollar mark at the box office.

During its opening weekend in theaters, the movie earned 10.5 million dollars and took the top spot, ahead of Little Miss Sunshine.

To shape his character, De Niro had his teeth worn down, sharpened, and deformed. After filming, he paid 20,000 dollars to reverse the procedure.

The storm sequence on the boat was shot in a 90-foot water tank built on a soundstage constructed specifically for the production.

The movie received two Oscar nominations: Robert De Niro was nominated for Best Actor and Juliette Lewis for Best Supporting Actress, though neither won.

Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Martin Balsam, who starred in the 1962 version, appear in Scorsese's film in brief roles that link the two versions.

Illeana Douglas's performance as Lori Davis included an idea of her own: in a scene where her character wears handcuffs, she replaced the expected panic with a laughing, cooperative attitude.
