Robert De Niro was born in Greenwich Village in 1943. His parents were Expressionist painters, which explains his ability to observe his surroundings without saying a word. He isn't an actor of grand speeches in interviews. He prefers to let the work speak for him.
In 1973, he first worked with Martin Scorsese in Mean Streets. It marked the beginning of a partnership that transformed New York crime cinema. De Niro brought a contained violence that was unsettling for the average moviegoer of the time.
The method was a religion.
To play Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II in 1974, he moved to Sicily. He wanted to learn the exact dialect of the region. He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and became the first performer to win the statuette while speaking almost entirely in a foreign language during the film.
Before shooting Taxi Driver in 1976, he got a real taxi driver's license. He drove through the streets of Manhattan during twelve-hour shifts to understand the character's loneliness. His physical commitment reached its limit in 1980 with Raging Bull. He gained nearly thirty kilos to show the decline of boxer Jake LaMotta.
In the late 90s, his career took a different direction. Many critics thought he had grown tired of suffering on movie sets. In 1999, he starred in Analyze This and discovered that his serious face worked wonders for dry humor. Audiences responded enthusiastically at the box office.
But audiences wanted to laugh.
Then came the Meet the Parents franchise in 2000. He went from tough guy of the underworld to the terrifying father-in-law of the American middle class. That film grossed more than $330 million worldwide and gave him complete financial freedom for his own projects.
He founded the production company TriBeCa Productions to revitalize his neighborhood after the 2001 attacks. He created a film festival that helped the local New York economy. De Niro has always understood filmmaking as an industry rooted in the ground it stands on.
In 2019, he reunited with Scorsese for The Irishman. The production used digital technology to make his face look younger on screen. It was a costly process that delayed the release by several months. Still, critics praised his ability to convey vulnerability through a gaze shaped by computer effects.
His connection to crime cinema remained strong in 2023 with Killers of the Flower Moon. This time he played William Hale, a man who orchestrated murders to control oil in Osage Nation land. The film had an estimated budget of $200 million funded by a tech platform.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite his age, he has never stopped working on several projects at once. He balances prestige dramas with straightforward action films that sometimes fly under the radar. The prestige of each individual title doesn't matter much to him if the pay is right to keep his hospitality investments going.
By 2024, the Nobu hotel and restaurant chain (which he co-founded) had more than fifty locations open across all five continents.
