The Risk of Not Being a Pretty Face

Diane Hall had to change her last name because another actress was already registered under her name with the union. She chose Keaton, her mother's maiden name, and arrived in New York with a determination that didn't match her apparent shyness. Her first steps on Broadway in the musical Hair in 1968 made it clear she wasn't going to follow the rules. She refused to strip on stage despite the script's demands.

That stubbornness caught the attention of a young Woody Allen who was looking for someone for the play Play It Again, Sam. The chemistry between them worked because neither was trying to win the other over at all costs. Her move to film came shortly after, and in 1972 she landed the role of Kay Adams in The Godfather. The shoot was chaotic for her, and she felt out of place among all those intense men and mob shadows.

But the die was cast.

In 1977, she starred in Annie Hall and the world discovered that you could be a movie star wearing wide-leg trousers, neckties and men's waistcoats. It wasn't a costume from the studio stylists, since nearly all the clothes were her own. The film earned her only Oscar for Best Actress and set an aesthetic that still gets copied on runways around the world.

Building a Personal Style

After the success of the comedy, she looked for dramatic roles to keep from being typecast as the scatterbrained girl from New York. In 1977, she starred in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, a dark film about loneliness and sex that broke her image as the friendly girl next door. It was a risky decision that critics applauded loudly.

Her professional collaboration with Warren Beatty in 1981 resulted in Reds. For this role she earned another Oscar nomination and proved she could carry the weight of a historical epic with political undertones. During the 1980s she alternated commercial projects like Baby Boom in 1987 with more personal ones.

And the gamble paid off.

In 1995, she decided to step behind the camera to direct Unstrung Heroes. The film quietly passed through the box office but confirmed her interest in visual storytelling beyond acting. She never stopped working, and in 1996 she reunited with Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn for The First Wives Club, a film that grossed more than $180 million worldwide.

The Business of Aging on Screen

The industry tends to forget women once they hit fifty, but she broke that barrier in 2003 with Something's Gotta Give. She was 57 years old when she filmed the nude scene opposite Jack Nicholson. That Nancy Meyers movie proved there was a huge market for love stories between adults.

But the movie business doesn't always forgive.

From 2010 onward, she focused on ensemble comedies that performed very well in the domestic market. In 2018, she starred in Book Club, a project that cost $10 million and ended up earning $104 million. Those numbers allowed her to maintain her status as a bankable actress without relying on big superhero franchises.

In 2023, she starred in the sequel Book Club: The Next Chapter, filmed entirely on location in Italy. A year later, in 2024, she appeared in the British comedy Arthur’s Whisky alongside Patricia Hodge and singer Lulu. Filming took place mainly in Scotland under the direction of Stephen Cookson.

Production of Summer Camp in 2024 marked her professional reunion with Kathy Bates after decades without sharing a set. The film was shot in North Carolina over the summer on a modest budget by Hollywood standards.
