The Face That Unsettled the Corleones

Marianna Hill never needed to shout to make the camera notice her.

In 1974, she played Deanna Corleone in The Godfather Part II, and her presence was a necessary counterpoint to the silence of Al Pacino. She was Fredo's drunken wife. She needed only three scenes to lodge her name in the memories of audiences of the time.

Born in Santa Barbara under the name Marianna Schwarzkopf. Her cousin was the B director Reeves Eason, which may have eased her way into the studios. But it was her sharp gaze that let her survive a Hollywood that devoured young actresses without mercy.

In 1962, she made her debut in Married Too Young.

From Eastwood's Prairies to Psychological Horror

Before joining the Coppola saga, she worked with Clint Eastwood in 1973. In the western High Plains Drifter, she played Verna Belknap. The shoot was tough because of the weather. Hill earned a standard fee for the era, despite her real weight in the plot.

The truth is, the actress was a TV fixture in the 1960s. She appeared in Star Trek during 1966, playing Dr. Helen Noel. She also appeared in Batman and Bonanza. She worked at a pace that would be exhausting for any top-tier star today.

In 1973, she starred in The Baby.

This psychological horror film is now a cult classic. Her portrayal of Ann Gentry is cold and calculated. The movie made just enough money to avoid being a financial disaster, but its cultural impact grew over the decades.

In 1966, she shot Paradise, Hawaiian Style alongside Elvis Presley. The set was relaxed. But she always preferred roles with more edge than the musical comedies of the day offered.

She decided to step away from the California spotlight in the late 1980s.

She moved to London to teach acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. Her last big-screen appearance came in 2005 with Comanche Stallion. She has retired from public life and does not give interviews about her years in the American film industry.
