The raw force of Texan realism

Joe Don Baker stands six foot two and never needed to shout for the camera to fear him.

Born in Texas in 1936, he brought that tough-guy air to the screen without much effort. Before making it to Hollywood, he scraped by in New York, taking whatever work came his way while trying to carve out a place at the Actors Studio. His training was classical, but his physique typecast him in roles where fists spoke louder than words.

His first major role was in Cool Hand Luke (1967), where he barely spoke a word next to Paul Newman. Baker was one of the prisoners, and his presence was enough to fill the frame. But the moment that defined his status came in 1973 with the release of Walking Tall.

That film about a sheriff with a wooden club in his hand was a mass-market phenomenon.

The production cost barely half a million dollars and ended up grossing more than 54 million at the U.S. box office. Baker played Buford Pusser with a dry, brutal violence that unsettled critics but fascinated rural audiences. And that's the thing: Baker never asked permission to dominate a scene.

Joe Don Baker was never a method actor.

Despite his success, he didn't want to be typecast in cheap action movies. In 1975, he starred in Mitchell, a cop thriller that years later would be torn apart by a TV comedy, something the actor didn't find funny at all. Because Baker always took his work with an almost religious seriousness.

The Strange Case of the Bond Agent

He is one of the few actors who went from main villain to a recurring ally in the 007 franchise. In The Living Daylights (1987), he played Brad Whitaker, an arms dealer obsessed with military history who clashed with Timothy Dalton's Bond.

Eight years later, he returned in GoldenEye (1995) to play Jack Wade, a rather careless CIA agent who helped Pierce Brosnan. Switching sides within the same franchise is not common in the industry. But producers liked how Baker humanized the world of espionage with his flowered shirts and his laid-back attitude.

He reprised the role of Wade in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997).

His connection to the Bond franchise gave him a global visibility that other actors of his generation lost once they hit their sixties. Baker understood that in commercial cinema, what matters is being recognizable before being a cover-page star.

Respect from the Great Directors

Martin Scorsese called him in 1991 for the shoot of Cape Fear. There he played Claude Kersek, a private investigator who ends up as one more of Max Cady's victims in one of the most harrowing sequences in the film.

The scene of his death is one of the tensest in the film, thanks to the vulnerability Baker projects despite his size. He also worked with directors such as John Frankenheimer and Barry Levinson. And his ability to play lawmen with a dark side was highly valued in 1990s Hollywood.

In 2012, he appeared in Mud under the direction of Jeff Nichols, playing the character of Neckbone's Uncle Galen. It was his last major film appearance before he voluntarily stepped away from the spotlight. Baker always preferred living on his ranch to walking the red carpets of Los Angeles.

Filming his scenes in Mud wrapped in just a few days in the state of Arkansas.
