Seth Gilliam is not a star who makes the tabloids for late-night scandals. He was born in New York in 1968 and trained at the State University of New York at Purchase. There, he shared hallways with other names who would later fill screens around the world.
His first significant film role came in 1994 with Safe Passage. But it was his part in Starship Troopers in 1997 that brought him visibility among science fiction fans. He played Sugar Watkins and proved he could handle a gun as naturally as he recited Shakespeare.
Gilliam is an actor of minimal gestures.
In 2002, the project that changed his professional standing arrived. He played Ellis Carver in The Wire. That HBO series was not a ratings hit at the time, but over the years it earned its place. Carver started out as a limited cop who only wanted to climb the ranks through easy arrests.
Over the five seasons, the character underwent a profound ethical transformation. Gilliam conveyed that maturity without needing big speeches. And that is his greatest strength. He works from silence and the weary gaze of someone who has seen too much. Because Gilliam doesn't play textbook tough guys. He plays men who are trying not to break.
In 2014 he first put on the clergyman's collar to join The Walking Dead. His role as Gabriel Stokes was a challenge that nearly cost him his mental health because of the audience's reaction. The character was a coward who let his congregation die behind the doors of his church.
Some fans of the show could not tell fiction from reality. Gilliam received constant death threats for years. But he stood firm and defended the evolution of his character. The Redemption of Gabriel Stokes became one of the longest story arcs in cable television.
Redemption is a slow process.
His involvement in the world of the living dead spanned almost a decade. In 2024 he returned to play the priest in the spin-off The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. He did so with a far more mystical and physical presence than in his early appearances.
Between film shoots, he always returns to theater. He has played Othello on several occasions and feels at home on stage because there is no editing to fall back on. In theater, the actor is the sole master of time and space. Gilliam prefers roles that require him to stay in the background and observe.
In 2011 he joined the cast of Teen Wolf as Dr. Alan Deaton. It was a supporting but recurring role that helped him connect with a much younger audience. He worked on that production until 2017. He has never sought to be the absolute lead of a blockbuster, and that lack of ego has allowed him to work steadily for more than thirty years.
Gilliam still lives in New York and avoids red carpets whenever he can.
In 2023 he appeared in the film Teen Wolf: The Movie, reprising his role as a veterinarian with supernatural abilities. Filming for his scenes wrapped in less than two weeks in Atlanta. The actor was paid his standard day rate and returned to the Broadway stage for a classic production.
