Emilio Sakraya isn't the typical German actor who shows up on set with a highlighted script and little else. Before turning twenty, he was already a karate champion in his country, and that physical discipline shapes every one of his movements in front of the camera. His face began to gain serious traction in 2014 thanks to the youth saga Bibi & Tina. But the kid who rode horses in children's movies had much darker plans for his career.
He soon grew tired of being the high school heartthrob.
In 2017, the series 4 Blocks gave him the chance to enter Berlin's criminal underworld. It was a smart move because it allowed him to radically shake off the teen idol label. And the bet paid off. From that moment on, the international market set its sights on his profile. In 2020, he took part in the American production Warrior Nun, and in 2021 he led the cast of Tribes of Europa for Netflix.
Because Sakraya understands that in today's industry, acting well isn't enough (you need a physique that can handle the demands of global streaming).
The real turning point came in 2022 when director Fatih Akin entrusted him with the role of Giwar Hajabi in the film Rheingold. Playing rapper Xatar demanded a physical and vocal transformation that few actors of his generation would have embraced with such rigor. Sakraya had to gain weight and change his vocal range to embody a man who went from refugee to criminal and finally to music star. The film surpassed 10 million euros at the German box office and firmly moved him away from lightweight teen productions.
But his obsession with physical control didn't end on that set. In 2024 he starred in Sixty Minutes, playing a mixed martial arts fighter who must cross Berlin in one hour to avoid losing custody of his daughter. He performed nearly all the fight scenes without stunt doubles, so what viewers see on screen is real sweat and exhaustion.
European action cinema needed a fresh face that didn't look like a product of the gym and design studio.
His musical side isn't just a whim of an actor who wants to sing. He released his first studio album, Roter Sand, in 2020 and continued his output with 1150 in 2022. His lyrics often explore his Moroccan and Serbian roots (his mother was born in Morocco and his father in Serbia). This cultural blend gives him a competitive edge in a market that looks for artists with a distinct identity and the ability to speak several languages effortlessly.
In 2024, his music career became more professional, with tours through large venues in cities such as Munich and Hamburg. His contract with Universal Music ensures that music is not just a side plan for the months without filming. Sakraya manages his own personal brand with a business structure that oversees both his record releases and his film contracts in Europe and the United States.
To prepare for Sixty Minutes, the actor underwent four hours of MMA training a day for five consecutive months. The film was shot entirely on location in Berlin, with temperatures dropping below zero during night shoots.
