Jasmin Gerat didn't need a drama school to understand how the camera works. In 1994, she won the Bravo Girl contest, and that event in a teen magazine opened the doors of German television to her right away. She worked on the TM3 channel and then moved on to MTV before turning twenty.
It was a quick transition.
Her film debut came in 1998 with the movie Caipiranha. But the industry didn't take her seriously until she began turning down presenting offers to focus on scripts. In 2000 she appeared in I Love You, Baby, and from that point on her name started turning up in the offices of casting directors in Berlin.
Her career truly took off in 2011. That year she co-starred in Kokowääh alongside Til Schweiger, and the film drew more than four million moviegoers to German cinemas. It was a box-office phenomenon that placed her at the center of European romantic comedy.
And the audience responded.
In 2012, she repeated the formula in Mann tut was man kann. Gerat played characters who blended a certain toughness with a naturalness rare in mainstream genre films. But she was looking for projects that demanded a less likable and more physical performance.
In 2016, she took on the role of inspector Stascha Novak in the series Der Kroatien-Krimi. Filmed in Split, this production became one of her longest-running projects and allowed her to explore suspense on an ongoing basis. The series maintains a strong audience on German public television, with screen shares that regularly exceed fifteen percent.
In 2023, she appeared in the Netflix series Schlafende Hunde. In this production she played Corinna Spect, and critics praised her ability to carry high-tension scenes with almost no dialogue. The project had worldwide distribution and helped her face become recognized beyond the traditional European market.
It was a risky bet.
The actress balanced these projects with the series Die Toten am Meer between 2020 and 2024. In this later phase, her profile has centered on characters with heavy dramatic weight and storylines tied to Germany's criminal past.
Filming for the 2024 episodes on the Croatian coast had a production budget of three million euros per episode.
