Sonja Gerhardt grew up in West Berlin in the late eighties. She studied classical dance for eleven years at the German Opera Ballet, and that discipline shaped the way she moved in front of the camera. In 2006, she landed her first role in the soap opera Schmetterlinge im Bauch after an audition she attended almost by accident.
German television found a new face.
She shot the sequel to Die Wilden Hühner auf Klassenfahrt in 2007, and young audiences embraced it right away. But she didn't want to stay in teen films. She sought darker roles in productions such as The White Rabbit in 2008. Before turning twenty, she already knew her place was in psychological drama.
She won the German Academy of Television Award for her work in Jack the Ripper in 2016. She played a woman searching for her brother in Victorian London, and critics praised her cool gaze. That same year brought the project that took her beyond German borders.
The series Ku'damm 56 premiered in 2016 to portray the suppression of women in postwar Germany. Gerhardt played Monika Schöllack. She did so with a mix of fragility and rebellion that connected with international audiences through streaming platforms.
Selling the Germany of the past turned out to be a profitable business.
The success of the production led to the sequels Ku'damm 59 in 2018 and Ku'damm 63 in 2021. Monika's character required a physical evolution that she developed through dance. The actress spent months rehearsing the rock and roll steps that defined her character's arc in a society waking up from conservatism.
In 2015, she appeared in Deutschland 83, one of the most exported espionage dramas in Europe. She played Annett Schneider. The series won an International Emmy, and her face became a regular fixture at the Cannes and Berlin markets (where she usually lives).
She starred in the medical drama Das Wunder von Kapstadt in 2022. The story centered on the first heart transplant performed in 1967. Gerhardt stepped into the shoes of a lab assistant who fought the sexism of the South African hospital system.
In 2023, she shot the series Der Schatten, based on the novel by Melanie Raabe. It was a grueling shoot under the direction of Christopher Schier. The plot required the actress to maintain constant tension throughout the show's six episodes and demanded absolute physical control in the chase scenes.
She appeared in the series Gute Freunde – Der Aufstieg des FC Bayern in 2023 for the streaming service RTL+. The production recreated the golden years of the Munich football club. Gerhardt's contracts for historical productions like this typically include six-month exclusivity clauses per project.
