Dance as an Iron Discipline

Emilia Schüle was born in 1992 in the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk. She was only one year old when her family moved to Germany in search of a future different from what the Siberian steppe offered. Before becoming interested in acting, she spent her childhood on modern dance and street dance.

That physical training gave her a professional discipline she still maintains on every film set today. In 2005, she took an acting workshop and shortly after landed her first role in the short film Nimmermehr. But her face didn't become familiar to the general public until 2008.

Her career took off to a whole new level with the release of Freche Mädchen.

The film drew more than 850,000 viewers to German cinemas and made her a recurring face on teenagers' binders. That could have been a golden trap. Many actors of her generation got stuck in that niche of light comedies and high school romances.

And the gamble paid off.

Breaking away from teen movies

Schüle decided to step away from easy roles and take on challenges that would test her dramatic range. In 2012, she joined the cast of Tatort, Germany's longest-running and most respected crime series. She played a young woman with a murky past who won over the most demanding casting directors in Berlin.

Her real breakthrough came in 2016 with the miniseries Ku’damm 56. The story depicted the suppression of women in postwar Germany through a dance school. Her role as Eva Schöllack allowed her to show a vulnerability she had not explored until then.

The production was so successful that it expanded with Ku’damm 59 and Ku’damm 63. During those years, Schüle learned to handle the demanding schedules of major television productions without neglecting film. In 2019, she starred in Traumfabrik, a big-budget production set at the Babelsberg Studios during the construction of the Berlin Wall.

That film had a budget of 10 million euros.

But the German market was becoming too small for her. Schüle always knew that her command of English and French were tools she had to leverage to break into European borders. So she began looking for projects where language would not be a barrier but a competitive advantage.

Versailles and Postwar Fashion

In 2022, she landed the lead role in the series Marie Antoinette, an international co-production shot in English. Playing the last queen of France required considerable physical effort due to the historical corsets and high-volume wigs. Critics praised her performance for avoiding the usual clichés of the capricious monarch.

That project opened the definitive doors of the global industry for her. In 2024, she took part in the series The New Look, where she shared the cast with Ben Mendelsohn and Juliette Binoche. In this production, she brought to life Catherine Dior, the designer's sister and a member of the French Resistance during the Nazi occupation.

For this role, she had to research in depth the lives of women who survived concentration camps. Filming for the series took place mainly on real locations in Paris and at Apple TV+ studios. The production featured costume design that faithfully replicated original pieces from the Dior fashion house of the 1940s.

Schüle splits her time between Berlin and wherever her next contract takes her. In 2024, she shot the film The 5th Wheel under the direction of Greg Kwedar. The budget for this film was kept under wraps throughout the entire post-production phase.
