Karoline Herfurth didn't need a drama school to catch the camera's attention. In 2000, she made her debut in Crazy almost by accident (a talent scout spotted her in her school yard), and from that moment her presence became a constant in German film. She was fifteen years old, with a gaze that blended an unusual maturity with the fragility of adolescence in East Berlin.
The real commercial breakthrough came in 2001 with Mädchen, Mädchen. It was a teen comedy that became a box office hit and moved her from the art-house circuit into mainstream success. The film worked because Herfurth avoided overacting and preferred to work from stillness.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2006, she shot Perfume: The Story of a Murderer under the direction of Tom Tykwer. Her role as the Plum Girl was brief but essential to the main plot. She was the face that sold the film around the world, and it opened the door to big-budget international productions. But she didn't want to be just the muse of established directors.
Most actresses of her generation would have settled for the offers coming out of Hollywood. Herfurth chose to return to Germany to shoot The Reader in 2008 and to keep training at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts. She knew that beauty in film has an expiration date and wanted a more solid structure for her career.
In 2013, she took part in Fack ju Göhte, and the film grossed more than 70 million euros in her home country alone. She played a by-the-book teacher who served as the comic counterpoint to a former criminal turned educator. The success was so overwhelming that sequels soon followed, but she was already thinking about something else.
Berlin changed everything.
In 2016, she decided she had heard enough instructions from others. She took the director's chair to shoot SMS für dich and also wrote the screenplay herself. It was a risky move, since German film is very strict about professional labels. You're either an actress or a director.
Her style as a director steers clear of big technical flourishes. She prefers to focus on quick dialogue and naturalistic lighting that never distracts the viewer from what matters. In 2019, she premiered Sweethearts and took full control of the screenplay to explore the action comedy from a less male-centered perspective.
For Herfurth, film is a tool for personal control. In 2022 she presented Wunderschön, and critics praised her ability to portray physical vulnerability without slipping into cheap sentimentality. She doesn't seek the constant approval of the international festival circuit. She prefers her films to fill the theaters in shopping centers across her country.
And the audience responded once again.
In 2024, she starred in Eine Million Minuten alongside Tom Schilling. The film was shot in Germany, Iceland, and Thailand with a budget of more than eight million euros. It sold more than 1.1 million tickets in its first five weeks in German cinemas. The shoot lasted sixty days, and an Arri Alexa 35 camera setup was used to capture the natural landscapes of northern Europe.
