France, 18th century. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a convicted murderer sentenced to death, is taken from his cell and brought to the balcony of the Palace of Justice. There the crowd jeers at him as his sentence is read aloud. While he awaits his fate, the film recalls the story of his life in flashbacks, from his first days after being abandoned. Ben Whishaw plays a man with an extraordinary sense of smell who barely speaks and understands the world through scent. Tom Tykwer directs a story that blends the everyday life of a dirty, noisy city with its protagonist's obsession with capturing aromas.
