Synopsis of Medici: Masters of Florence

In Florence, in 1429, Giovanni de' Medici is a wealthy banker who also represents one of the most important political forces in the Signoria, the city's government. His goal is to increase his family's power, and to do so he seeks an agreement with the Papacy. His plans arouse the distrust of rivals within the republic, who watch every move the Medici make. Cosimo dreams of completing the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, but no architect finds a viable solution because of the shape of the base built for the cathedral. Created by Frank Spotnitz and Nicholas Meyer, the series airs on Rai 1 and stars Richard Madden.

Trivia about Medici: Masters of Florence

At the Roma Fest panel in 2015, Spotnitz said the season would be more of a thriller than a historical saga.

The courtyards and main staircases of the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano double as the streets of Florence and a palace in Rome.

Several scenes of Montepulciano were filmed in front of the Duomo, with its unfinished facade as the backdrop, and they often mistakenly show the Florence cathedral in the background.

The opening theme, titled Renaissance, was produced with the collaboration of Skin, and its music video was released the day before the premiere in Italy.

The full soundtrack was released on December 20, 2019 through Sugar Music, with 47 tracks composed by Paolo Buonvino.

In Italy, the premiere of the first episode drew a record 8.04 million viewers, according to Auditel.

The series won the Capri Award for Best TV Series in 2016, and in 2018 it received the La Chioma di Berenice awards for Best Makeup and Best Production Design in a Fiction Series.

The second season was approved by Rai before the international premiere of the first, which earned an average share of 27.34% and nearly seven million viewers in Italy.
