Stopwatch before script

Raoul Bova didn't start his public life chasing applause on a film set. At fifteen he was already Italian champion in the 100 meter backstroke. That discipline of dawn practices and chlorine shaped a dry, disciplined character that he would later bring to his more physical performances.

In 1991 he made his on-screen debut in Una storia italiana. He had no prior experience, but the director wanted a presence that could fill the frame without relying on grand verbal flourishes. And the experiment worked.

His body was his first professional tool.

His media breakout came in 1993 with Piccolo grande amore. That romantic comedy from Carlo Vanzina made him the face on half of Europe's school binders. But Bova quickly understood that the teen heartthrob label has a very cruel expiration date in the Roman film industry.

So he decided to tarnish his image. He pursued roles in crime and mafia stories such as La piovra, where he played Vice Commissioner Breda over several seasons. It was his way of saying the swimmer no longer existed and the actor was claiming his place.

The American adventure and Hollywood's price

In 2002 he set out to conquer the American market. He shared the bill with Sylvester Stallone in Avenging Angelo, a film that came and went without making much of a splash. Los Angeles quickly typecast him as the Latin lover or the dangerous foreigner.

But in 2003 he landed Under the Tuscan Sun. His role as Marcello opposite Diane Lane gave him the international visibility he was looking for. The film grossed more than $58 million worldwide and put his name on the radar of casting directors at the major studios.

Hollywood never quite figured out what to do with him.

In 2004 he took part in AVP: Alien vs. Predator, a blockbuster production that demanded more physical effort than dramatic range. Bova accepted the challenge because he knew that being part of a franchise of that caliber was a financial safety net. Afterward, he preferred to return to Italy to better control the pace of his career.

In 2011 he shot Immaturi – Il viaggio in Greece. There he met Spanish actress Rocío Muñoz Morales. That encounter changed his family life and created a lasting bond with Spain that led him to take part in television projects outside his home country.

The challenge of replacing a legend

Nobody bet on the change of cassock.

In 2022 Bova took on what is probably the most difficult assignment in European television. He had to replace Terence Hill in the series Don Matteo after more than twenty years of absolute leadership by the veteran actor. He played Don Massimo, a priest with a complicated past and a motorcycle instead of a bicycle.

Italian critics were fierce before the thirteenth season premiered. But the ratings silenced the doubts. The first episode with Bova in the lead earned a 29.9% audience share on RAI 1, which amounted to more than six million live viewers.

In 2023 he broadened his range with The Good Mothers for Disney+. In the series he plays a lawyer caught in the web of the Calabrian ’Ndrangheta. It was a project that moved away from the usual glamour of his previous work and into a gritty, suffocating realism.

The fourteenth season of Don Matteo was filmed in 2024 in the city of Spoleto. The production had an approximate budget of €15 million to cover the costs of the ten episodes that make up the main block of the season.
