Marco Leonardi was born in Melbourne, but his face belongs to the Sicilian imagination of the late 1980s.
He was seventeen when Giuseppe Tornatore cast him in front of the camera to play the teenage Salvatore in Cinema Paradiso. The film's premiere earned a thirteen-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. That success in 1988 gave him a direct route into the global industry, without any conventional acting school training.
It was a thirteen-minute standing ovation premiere at Cannes.
Because his training was purely practical and built on his gaze. And that melancholic gaze convinced Alfonso Arau to bring him to Mexico shortly after. Before turning twenty, he was already a recognizable face in arthouse cinemas across half the world.
In 1992, he starred in Like Water for Chocolate alongside Lumi Cavazos. The film broke box office records for a Spanish-language production in the United States and grossed more than $21 million in North America alone. During filming, he began a romantic relationship with his co-star that lasted nearly a decade.
But the Hollywood industry is often a treacherous field for European actors who don't master the local accent. As a result, his career settled into a zone where he alternated B-movie projects with brief appearances in major productions that did not always make the most of his dramatic potential.
Then came supporting roles in big-budget productions.
Robert Rodriguez called him in 2003 for Once Upon a Time in Mexico. He shared the set with Johnny Depp and Antonio Banderas, playing Fideo. The action film cost around $29 million to make and performed well at the box office. But Leonardi decided his path did not lie in being the eternal Latino sidekick in Los Angeles.
Leonardi returned to his roots in search of more complex celebrities. In 2014, he shot Anime Nere under the direction of Francesco Munzi. It was a radical change of pace in which he played a drug dealer in a gritty crime drama far removed from the sweetness of his early career.
Italian critics took him seriously once again.
He appeared in The Traitor in 2019 under the direction of Marco Bellocchio. In this film about the Cosa Nostra, he played Giovanni Bontate. It is a restrained performance in which the actor shows that the years have hardened his features and his ability to convey danger. But he did not abandon international auteur cinema.
In 2022, he worked on Padre Pio with Abel Ferrara and Shia LaBeouf. The shoot took place on real locations in Puglia, and Leonardi played Gerardo. The film had an estimated budget of 3 million euros and premiered at the Venice Film Festival. His role in the series The Good Mothers from 2023 was shot entirely with Sony Venice cameras to capture the natural light of Calabria.
