Rome, 1973. John Paul Getty III, a sixteen-year-old teenager, lives in the Italian capital with his mother, Gail Harris, after his parents divorced. He is the grandson of J. Paul Getty, the oil magnate who is at that time the richest private citizen in the world. The boy is kidnapped by an organized crime ring that demands a ransom of $17 million. Gail doesn't have that money. By giving up alimony in exchange for custody of her children, she lost access to the family fortune, so she must convince the grandfather to pay. Ridley Scott directs the film, and Michelle Williams plays Gail.
