Claudia Gerini won the Miss Teenager pageant at fourteen, but the crown ended up forgotten in a corner of her home in Rome. That 1985 trophy was just the bait that got her into 1990s television. She took part in the show Non è la Rai, where she discovered the camera didn't intimidate her.
Her meeting with Carlo Verdone in 1995 transformed her from a pretty face into a comedic actress with real bite. They shot Viaggi di nozze, and the character of Jessica stuck to Italians for decades. That film grossed thirty billion lire and took her out of the youth television circuit.
But Gerini didn't want to be just the blonde muse of an established director. So she sought roles that demanded more than a heavy Roman accent. In 2003, she worked under the direction of Mel Gibson in The Passion of the Christ, playing Claudia Procula. She spoke Latin and moved among stone sets in the city of Matera.
And the gamble paid off.
Because the Italian industry tends to pigeonhole its actresses into light comedy, and she needed to break through that ceiling. In 2017, she appeared in John Wick: Chapter 2 to face Keanu Reeves on the global stage. Gerini accepted the role of Gianna D'Antonio because she holds a black belt in Taekwondo and wanted to shoot her own action scenes.
The bathtub scene in Rome was shot with exhausting technical precision. International action cinema gave her a visibility that European drama sometimes denied her. Her martial arts training allowed her to perform choreography that other actresses of her generation handed off to stunt performers.
Later in life, she felt the need to control the whole story from the director's chair. In 2022, she made her directing debut with Tapirulàn, a film in which she also plays a therapist who works on a treadmill. She shot the entire film in just eighteen days with a very small crew.
Fast-paced shoots don't scare her.
She appeared in the series Suburra between 2017 and 2020, playing a Vatican account manager. It was a cold, calculating role that erased any trace of the naive young woman she had been at the start. The Netflix production was distributed in 190 countries, which gave her the financial freedom to choose more projects in the following years.
Gerini founded her own production company so she wouldn't have to depend on calls from the big traditional studios. In 2023, she got involved in developing scripts that focus on middle-aged women facing real professional conflicts. Still, she continues to accept supporting roles if the director has a clear vision for the editing and narrative pacing.
In 2024, she shot in Sicily under a blazing sun.
The actress maintains a permanent residence in Rome and avoids social events unrelated to directly promoting her films. Her contract for an advertising campaign for a pasta brand in 2021 included strict clauses on the final edit of the pieces. Filming of her next feature is scheduled for winter 2026 at the Cinecittà studios.
