The Hunger of Pozzuoli

Sofia Villani Scicolone grew up dodging bombings and sharing a bed with relatives in a tiny apartment in Pozzuoli. Her knees were too bony, and her name never quite fit the posters for local beauty contests. But postwar hunger sharpens the survival instinct above all else.

In 1950, she met Carlo Ponti during the Miss Rome pageant. He was twenty-two years older than her and had a legal wife in an Italy where divorce was both a sin and a crime. That producer decided the girl with the almond eyes needed a name that sounded less like the neighborhood and more like the international market. And so the Loren surname was born.

And the gamble paid off.

Her first Hollywood contracts forced her to learn English at a crash pace so she wouldn't be seen as just a pretty face exported from the Mediterranean. She shot The Pride and the Passion in 1957 alongside Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra. Grant fell for her during the shoot in Spain, but Sophia chose the security Ponti offered over the fickle promises of the American star.

The Oscar She Never Collected

In 1962, she won the statuette for her role in Two Women. It was the first time the Academy gave its top prize to a performance in a non-English language. Sophia did not attend the ceremony in Los Angeles because her fear of losing in public paralyzed her. She stayed home in Rome, waiting for a phone call that came at six in the morning.

Marcello Mastroianni was her other half on screen for decades. They worked together in twelve films. In A Special Day, shot in 1977, they showed that physical attraction could be set aside to explore loneliness and fascism. The chemistry between them was so real that Italian audiences refused to believe they weren't a couple off the Cinecittà sets.

But her private life was always shielded by an almost obsessive discretion.

In the late 1960s, she faced legal trouble with Italian authorities over her marriage to Ponti, which the Church did not recognize. They had to obtain French citizenship in order to marry legally and avoid bigamy charges. That scandal did not slow her pace of work in major European and American productions.

Taxes and Comebacks

In 1982, she spent seventeen days in the Caserta prison on a tax evasion charge. The international press filled its front pages with photos of the actress entering prison, but the Italian people welcomed her with flowers when she was released. The sentence was reviewed decades later, and in 2013 the courts ruled in her favor, acknowledging that the miscalculation was not her fault.

She never stopped working completely.

By 2020, she had accepted the lead role in The Life Ahead, directed by her son Edoardo Ponti. Filming took place in the city of Bari over ten summer weeks. She played a Holocaust survivor who cares for the children of sex workers, a role that earned her the David di Donatello award for Best Actress at the age of eighty-six.

She has maintained her primary residence in Geneva for years.

Her personal jewelry collection was partly auctioned off during the 1980s, but she still keeps the most meaningful pieces from her films with De Sica. In 1991, she received an Honorary Oscar for her lifetime career. The contract for her last film in 2020 set a base salary of four million euros, plus percentages from distribution on digital platforms.
