Sarah Jessica Parker was born in Nelsonville, Ohio, in 1965 into a large family where there was no money for indulgences. Her mother and stepfather ran a household with eight children, so art soon became a professional path rather than a hobby.
At just eleven years old, she was already performing on Broadway in The Innocents. Shortly after, she landed the lead role in the musical Annie, and that theater discipline shaped a work ethic that her co-stars would praise decades later.
Television wasn't the plan.
During the 1980s she took on a string of youth-oriented projects, including the series Square Pegs and the film Footloose in 1984. At the time she was the charming eternal supporting actress, but her name didn't yet top the lists of Hollywood's major studios.
In 1991, she filmed L.A. Story alongside Steve Martin, which let her show a sharper comedic side. But the real turning point came in 1998, when she agreed to star in a series for a cable channel called HBO that was looking for bold, adult content.
The series Sex and the City stayed on air until 2004 and completely transformed her career. Parker didn't just play Carrie Bradshaw; she took on executive producing duties starting in the second season to control the show's tone and aesthetic.
And the gamble paid off.
That contract guaranteed her a nudity clause of zero in the contract (unusual for a series of that kind). That control over her own image allowed her to build a personal brand that went beyond the screen and connected directly with New York's fashion industry.
After the original series ended in 2004, she tried to regain her footing in film with romantic comedies such as The Family Stone in 2005. Box office results were mixed, but her ability to generate income shifted toward the business sector with the launch of her fragrance Lovely that same year.
In 2014, she launched her own footwear brand called SJP Collection. Her strategy was to step away from mass licensing, personally oversee manufacturing in Italy, and distribute through luxury department stores.
She returned to television with the series Divorce in 2016, playing a much more bitter and less glamorous character. The show ran for three seasons and proved that her range went beyond cocktails and tulle dresses.
Money changed the rules.
In 2021, she returned to her best-known role in And Just Like That…, again serving as lead executive producer. Filming of the second season in 2023 faced criticism for the absence of certain original characters, but viewing numbers kept the show afloat.
Parker managed a fortune that in 2024 exceeded 150 million dollars. The production budget for each episode of her series that same year was set at 10 million dollars per installment.
