Kathy Najimy was born in San Diego in 1957 and grew up in a Lebanese-American family where comedy was a way to chew over reality. She never set out to be the pretty face on Hollywood posters. Her aim was always something else.
In the late 1980s, she formed the comedy duo The Kathy and Mo Show with Mo Gaffney. There, they dissected feminism and social conventions with a bite that caught the industry off guard. HBO aired their specials, and the industry realized that this woman with the raspy voice knew exactly where to strike.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1992, she landed on the set of Sister Act to play Sister Mary Patrick. Her boundless energy sometimes overshadowed Whoopi Goldberg herself. Najimy quickly understood that supporting roles are the real engine of physical comedy, and she wasn't afraid to look ridiculous.
A year later came Hocus Pocus. Disney didn't quite know what to do with a film about witches who eat children, but the lead trio saved it from initial box office disappointment. Mary Sanderson, with her crooked mouth and her knack for children, became a cult phenomenon that took years to be reappraised by critics.
Najimy voiced Peggy Hill on the animated series King of the Hill from 1997 to 2010. Over thirteen seasons, she built a complex, contradictory, and deeply human character through a microphone. She earned about 100,000 dollars per episode during the final stages of production.
She has used her visibility to wade into political debates without asking permission. She advocates for reproductive rights and fights fat-shaming with a fervor that has cost her more than one endorsement deal. She has never cared much about being rejected by brands.
Because her priority was the message.
In 2001, she appeared in the comedy Rat Race directed by Jerry Zucker. The film earned more than 85 million dollars worldwide and confirmed that her name in the credits was a guarantee of box office success. But commercial film began to lose its appeal for her compared with the stage of Broadway.
In 2021, she joined the cast of the series The Morning Show, playing Sylvia Portman. Her presence on the Apple TV+ production brought a veteran's steadiness to a fast-paced script. She never needed to shout to get the camera's attention.
Her return to Salem came in 2022 with the release of Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+. The production had a budget of 40 million dollars and broke viewing records during its first weekend. Najimy once again twisted her mouth to the opposite side from the original film, due to a continuity error she chose to keep as an inside joke.
She continues to choose projects with strong social themes. In 2023, she took part in the voice cast of the series Human Resources and remained involved in charities that protect animals. Today, her schedule is split between recording studios and fundraising galas.
She has lived in New York with her husband, Dan Finnerty, since 1998.
