Charlie Vickers had no intention of becoming an actor when he started studying arts at RMIT University in Melbourne. At the time, his plan centered on books and theory, but a couple of amateur theater groups changed the course of his life story.

He moved to London in 2014 to train at the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. He spent three years there polishing an accent that would later help him fool half the world on the big screen.

And it worked.

From Tuscany to London

In 2017 he finished his studies, and the British industry welcomed him with a role in the series Medici. He played Guglielmo Pazzi in 2018 and shared the set with Sean Bean, an actor who, curiously, also died on screen before Vickers reached mass recognition.

That production, shot in Italy, gave him the experience he needed to understand the pace of major international shoots. But after that job came a quiet period, in which the actor had to handle the uncertainty typical of newly graduated performers.

Between 2018 and 2019, he appeared in the Australian feature film Palm Beach under the direction of Rachel Ward. It was a supporting role in which he shared scenes with Bryan Brown and Sam Neill, logging valuable hours in a top-tier professional setting.

And he knew how to wait.

The Shadow of Middle-earth

The casting process for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was an exercise in patience and absolute secrecy. Vickers sent in his audition tape without knowing exactly which character he was up for, something common in the big-budget productions run by Amazon Studios.

In 2022, the world met Halbrand, a human castaway hiding the most sought-after secret in modern fantasy. Revealing his true identity at the end of the first season required a very specific physical and vocal change, which the actor prepared for over several months.

For the second season, which aired in 2024, the actor had to play Annatar, a manipulative version of the villain Sauron. He spent eight hours a day in the makeup chair to achieve the aesthetic transformation required by the production team.

Because the weight of a franchise of this caliber demands almost military discipline.

The Price of Anonymity

Despite the media attention surrounding the big franchises, Vickers keeps a low profile in his private life. As of 2024, his filmography is limited to very specific titles, where he prefers the quality of the technical crew over piling up credits on his celebrity profile.

His theater training in London remains the foundation of his working method. Before each scene, he often reviews the notes from his student years to maintain interpretive discipline in front of the green screen used for visual effects.

The second season of the Amazon series reportedly had an estimated budget of $700 million.
