Silence as a working tool

Joseph Mawle lost much of his hearing at age 16 due to labyrinthitis. This fact is not a footnote in his biography, because it shaped how he understood acting from day one. Rather than relying only on the script, Mawle learned to read the bodies and intentions of his fellow cast members.

He studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School after convincing the directors that his partial deafness was not a limitation but a creative advantage. And the gamble paid off.

In 2006 he received his first major recognition with Soundproof. He played a deaf man accused of murder, and his performance earned him a BAFTA Award nomination. British industry then discovered an actor who mastered stillness and the power of a gaze with almost surgical precision.

Mawle isn't your typical method actor, but his preparation is famous for its physical intensity.

To shoot The Passion in 2008, he spent weeks researching the story of Jesus of Nazareth from a human perspective, away from traditional mysticism. The result was one of the rawest versions of the character ever seen on television. But the general public would still take a while to put a full name to the face on a mass scale.

Benjen Stark's shadow

The premiere of Game of Thrones in 2011 changed the scale of his career worldwide. His role as Benjen Stark was brief on screen but essential to the series' mythology. He appeared in season one and then vanished for years, leaving fans speculating about his whereabouts on every internet forum.

Mawle returned to the series in 2016 and 2017 to close out his character's arc. He did so with an imposing physical presence (white walker makeup included), which cemented his image as the ideal actor for tormented, solitary characters. Still, Mawle has always preferred auteur projects and British prestige series over Hollywood blockbusters.

He never sought the role of leading man.

During that decade he took part in shows such as Ripper Street and Birdsong. In the latter, he worked alongside Eddie Redmayne in 2012, playing a sapper during World War I. Mawle has a knack for blending into the mud and grime of period productions so that it never looks like a costume.

The resignation nobody understood

In 2022 he played Adar in the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. His character was the most praised by critics, thanks to a mix of vulnerability and menace that rescued the series from a certain narrative listlessness. Many took for granted that he would be the anchor of the following seasons.

But Mawle voluntarily left the Amazon project before shooting the second installment.

It was a professional decision driven by his desire to explore new kinds of roles and avoid being trapped in a long-running franchise. The production company announced his replacement, actor Sam Hazeldine, for episodes shot in 2023. Mawle simply wished the team good luck and focused on projects with a different dramatic weight.

In 2023 he joined the cast of 1923 (the Yellowstone spin-off) to play Captain Shipley. It was a brief role, but it allowed him to work in the Taylor Sheridan universe alongside names like Harrison Ford. In 2024 he joined the cast of the miniseries Mary & George, playing Sir David Graham.

His per-episode pay on major streaming productions is estimated at six-figure sums, depending on the scale of the production. Mawle usually lives in London and keeps a private life strictly away from the British tabloids.
