Markella Kavenagh did not need years of casting calls in Los Angeles for the industry to take notice of her. Her entry into the professional circuit came in 2018 with the series Romper Stomper. At the time, she was barely an unknown sharing the screen with established names of the Australian scene.
And the gamble paid off.
That same 2018, she landed two other major projects on her country's television. She took part in the new version of Picnic at Hanging Rock and in the thriller The Cry. On the latter production, she worked alongside Jenna Coleman and began to catch the attention of international casting directors.
Her face projected a mix of fragility and determination that suited period stories or contemporary dramas. But the real jump in scale was yet to come from the offices of a streaming platform.
In 2019, Markella Kavenagh became the first officially announced name in the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It was news that made headlines around the world because the production had a budget of more than 460 million dollars for its first season alone.
She played Elanor "Nori" Brandyfoot, a hobbit who served as the emotional anchor for viewers. Filming in New Zealand stretched on for months because of the global health restrictions of 2020.
It was a process of creative isolation.
Despite the pressure from Tolkien fans, she kept a low profile in the media. In 2022, the series hit screens, and her character became central to the plot of the Stranger. Critics praised her ability to humanize a fantasy race through minimal gestures.
Before the fantasy phenomenon completely absorbed her, she shot My First Summer in 2020. It is an independent film where the weight falls almost exclusively on silences. Because Kavenagh prefers working with subtext over explanatory dialogue.
In 2023, she returned to Australian television with Bad Behaviour. It was a return to her roots with a story about power dynamics and harassment at a girls' boarding school. The series received praise at the Berlin Film Festival for its visual rawness and direct script.
The video game industry also came knocking on her door.
In 2024, her casting in the movie Watch Dogs, based on the popular Ubisoft franchise, was confirmed. Filming for this adaptation began in July 2024 under the direction of Mathieu Turi and with New Regency producing. The film wrapped its main photography phase in the fall of that same year.
