Milly Alcock was washing dishes at a restaurant in Sydney when she got the call that often changes life paths. She was 19 years old and had just left high school because she felt classrooms had nothing to offer her. It wasn't a romantic or impulsive decision. It was a matter of creative survival.
She preferred the mud of film sets to textbooks.
Her first major role came in 2019 with the series Upright. In this Australian production, she played Meg, a runaway teen who crosses the desert with a piano on her back. The role earned her a nomination from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts. But the most important thing was that she proved she could carry the weight of a complex story without missing a beat.
Before that project, she had appeared in small productions such as Janet King and A Place to Call Home. These were supporting roles that paid the bills but never fully showcased her expressive range. By 2020, the local industry already knew Alcock was not an ordinary supporting actress.
She didn't need any elaborate technical tricks to get into George R.R. Martin's universe. In 2020, she sent a homemade taped audition for a secret project that turned out to be House of the Dragon. The producers were looking for someone with a mix of physical fragility and a gaze that could burn through the screen. Alcock fit that description naturally.
During filming in 2021, she spent months under platinum-blonde wigs and learning High Valyrian. Her performance as Rhaenyra Targaryen drew the attention of international critics from the very first episode. Nearly ten million viewers watched the series premiere in the United States. That brought a level of exposure the actress had never actively sought.
The whole world was watching her.
Despite her sudden fame, the actress kept a low profile in London. In 2023, she decided to return to the stage in the West End production of The Crucible. Playing Abigail Williams was a risky move after her massive television success. Many young actors would have immediately chased a multimillion-dollar Hollywood contract, but she chose theater to keep learning her craft.
Her big-budget film breakthrough was confirmed in January 2024. James Gunn chose her to become the new Supergirl in the DC Universe. The film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on Tom King's comics and aims for a much rawer, less idealized version of the character. Filming was scheduled to begin at the end of that same year.
Alcock went from local productions in Australia to leading a global franchise in less than five years. In 2025, her involvement in other Warner Bros. projects was announced, allowing her to continue her character across different film installments. The industry no longer treats her as a young promise but as a commercial reality.
And the gamble paid off.
Her contract includes appearances in multiple installments of the franchise over the next decade. The estimated budget for her first film as a lead exceeds 150 million dollars, not counting international promotional costs.
