Philadelphia Roots and His Time at Juilliard

David Corenswet was born in Philadelphia in 1993 into a family where law and theater went hand in hand. His father was an actor who had turned lawyer, which explains why young David understood early on that acting is a craft before it is a dream.

After graduating from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York in 2016, he began looking for a foothold in television with brief appearances. During that period he appeared in one-off episodes of series such as Elementary and Instinct, but big offers took a long time to arrive.

Nobody handed him the role.

In 2019, Ryan Murphy spotted him for The Politician, and his professional life changed dramatically. Corenswet played River Barkley, a character who, despite his brief screen time, set the emotional tone of the entire series. He had a physical presence reminiscent of the classic leading men of the 1950s, but with a modern vulnerability.

The Weight of Classic Style

His collaboration with Murphy deepened in 2020 with the release of Hollywood on Netflix. In this miniseries he played Jack Castello, a World War II veteran trying to make it in the film industry.

It was his first leading role in a big-budget production and it forced him to work with a traditional leading-man image that sometimes made him uncomfortable. In several interviews, Corenswet has said his goal was always to move away from the pretty-face label and take on more complex characters.

But the market still saw him as the natural heir to the stars of the Golden Age.

In 2022 he shot Pearl under the direction of Ti West, and there he proved he could fit into independent horror cinema. He played a movie projectionist in a suffocating plot, where his square jaw and polished look served as the perfect contrast to the protagonist's madness.

And the gamble paid off.

The Leap into the Superhero Universe

The casting process for the new Clark Kent was one of the events most closely followed by the specialized press in 2023. James Gunn was looking for an actor who could convey the character's inherent kindness without slipping into parody. Corenswet won out over other candidates after months of screen tests and demanding physical training.

For the filming of Superman in 2024, the actor had to gain nearly twenty kilos of muscle mass to match the physical profile of the DC hero. This radical change permanently erased his image as a languid young man from television series.

In 2024 he also joined the cast of Twisters and the miniseries Lady in the Lake alongside Natalie Portman. These projects, shot just before he put on the red cape, let him keep one foot in drama and the other in big-budget commercial cinema.

Filming of Superman officially wrapped in Cleveland in July 2024, with an estimated budget of over $150 million.
