Delaney Williams has the face of someone who has seen too many case files and too few hours of sleep. He's not a poster boy and has never tried to be. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1959, he learned early that in this industry the gaps get filled by presence, not artifice.
In 2002 he landed on The Wire to play Sergeant Jay Landsman. It was no ordinary role. The real Landsman existed and worked on the show's production as a consultant. Williams had to deal with that constant shadow while chewing gum and reading porn magazines at his desk in the fiction.
The realism was suffocating.
But the actor preferred to build his own version of the sergeant. He mixed dark humor with a bureaucratic apathy that was painfully recognizable to anyone who has worked in a government office. That choice gave him a longevity that few supporting characters achieve in such ensemble dramas.
In 2002 he also began his work on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. There he plays John Buchanan, the defense attorney every viewer wants to see defeated. But Williams gives him a cold professionalism that keeps him from becoming a cartoon villain.
On this set Williams uses his physical presence to intimidate witnesses on the stand. He doesn't need to shout. A look of disbelief and a tone of voice suggesting he is the smartest person in the room are enough. He has appeared in more than 45 episodes of this franchise, playing the same character.
And he does it without repeating his tics.
In 2022 he returned to David Simon's universe with the miniseries We Own This City. He played Commissioner Kevin Davis. It was a return to the Baltimore pavement, but with a much darker and more bureaucratic tone than during his sergeant years.
Because Williams understands that authority isn't always loud. Sometimes authority is a tired man sitting behind a cheap wooden desk. In 2024 he appeared in the short film The Groomsman, directed by G. Robert Vornkahl.
Earns per filming day according to the standard SAG-AFTRA union pay scales for character actors.
