Carolyn McCormick joined the Dick Wolf universe in 1991 to play psychologist Elizabeth Olivet. It wasn't a lead role, but her presence extended across more than half of the seasons of the original Law & Order. Her first appearance came in the episode titled Confession, and from that moment on her face became linked to criminal analysis on American television.
What began as a one-time collaboration evolved into a constant presence across several branches of the police franchise. Her original contract did not anticipate such longevity.
Before stepping onto television sets, McCormick honed her craft on regional theater stages and in Broadway productions. In 1985 she appeared in the film Enemy Mine under the direction of Wolfgang Petersen (playing Morse), and in 1988 she joined the cast of the series Star Trek: The Next Generation. During that shoot she brought Minuet to life, a holographic character who left a deep mark on the space saga's mythology.
Her career has always orbited between cult science fiction and the rawest realism of Manhattan's courtrooms.
Her voice has a texture that documentary and audiobook directors recognize instantly. That's why Ken Burns chose her to narrate segments of his documentary series The West in 1996. But her largest body of voice work lies in globally successful young adult literature.
In 2008 she recorded the audio version of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and returned for the sequels in the following years. She sold millions of digital copies thanks to a dry delivery that avoided unnecessary melodrama. In New York's industry, McCormick is known for her ability to record marathon sessions without losing her tone.
Her work as a narrator has given her a financial stability that many actors of her generation lost with the rise of streaming. In 2011 she voiced several characters in the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic, and in 2014 she narrated The Jinx, the documentary about Robert Durst.
McCormick maintains her residence in Manhattan, and that firmly shapes her professional schedule. In 2022 she appeared in the series The Good Fight, once again playing a psychologist (though this time under a different name), and in 2023 she joined the cast of the miniseries Assassination in the End of the World, produced by FX.
She continues to add credits to independent productions as well.
In 2024, she shot the short film The Gifting and stayed active in New York theater with dramatic readings of contemporary playwrights. Her marriage to actor Byron Jennings has also led to recurring professional collaborations on stage (as in the play The Dinner Party in 2000).
Carolyn McCormick collects royalties for image rights from the constant reruns on cable television across much of the world.
