Maxim Baldry was born in Surrey in 1996, but his childhood was anything but British. He lived in Moscow and Warsaw until age seven, because his mother is Russian and his father is English. This cultural mix gave him a language fluency that became his best casting tool long before he knew what a professional audition was.
In 2007, he shared the screen with Rowan Atkinson in Mr. Bean's Holiday. He was eleven years old and already knew what it meant to travel halfway around the world to promote a studio film. The boy who played Stepan wasn't a product of London's acting schools, and that showed in his natural ease in front of the camera.
Shortly after, he joined the HBO series Rome as Caesarion. Filming at Cinecittà Studios in Italy was complex and gave him a close look at how a big-budget production works. But after that peak in his child-acting career, the industry seemed to forget about him for a long stretch.
And the gamble paid off.
Baldry used those years of acting silence to explore music and photography. He was part of bands such as Terra Twin, where he experimented with sounds far from the commercial spotlight. That period of relative anonymity helped him build a personal identity outside the film sets.
In 2019, his career took a decisive leap with Years and Years. He played Viktor Goraya, a Ukrainian refugee fleeing persecution over his sexual orientation in a dystopian future. It was the role that put him on the radar of prestige television and allowed him to leave the child actor label behind for good.
Russell T. Davies's series made a deep impression with its political bluntness. Baldry brought a physical vulnerability that contrasted with the coldness of the plot. So it came as no surprise that casting directors at major streaming platforms began calling him again.
Not long after, the call from Amazon Studios came.
In 2022, he joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to play Isildur. Filming in New Zealand required months of physical preparation. He had to learn to ride horses and handle a sword under the supervision of elite trainers to meet the demands of the script.
But the actor didn't just follow action choreography. He worked on the psychology of a character who carries the weight of a tragic fate known to millions of readers around the world. Filming of the first season stretched over more than a year due to the global health restrictions of 2020.
In 2024, he took part in the series Say Nothing for FX. The production focuses on the Northern Ireland conflict and is based on Patrick Radden Keefe's research book. Baldry plays a character involved in IRA activities in Belfast during the 1970s.
The production team for this series used Sony Venice 2 cameras to capture the grainy atmosphere of the era. Filming took place mainly on real locations in Ireland to preserve the historical accuracy of the story.
