Synopsis of Years and Years

The Lyons are a British family from Manchester whose members go through very different moments in their lives. Daniel, a housing officer, is married to Ralph. Stephen and Celeste, a couple with two daughters, worry about their girls' future. Rosie, a single mother, looks for a new partner, and Edith throws herself into one humanitarian cause after another. Above them all is Muriel, the grandmother, a nonagenarian with a severe and inflexible character. All their lives converge on a pivotal night in 2019. From there, the story jumps ahead and follows the Lyons over the next fifteen years, as the United Kingdom is shaken by political upheaval, economic instability and technological advances.

Trivia about Years and Years

The first episode was edited on the day it aired to add a radio bulletin that mentioned the death of Doris Day, which had occurred the previous day.

Filming locations included Trafford Park for the refugee camp and the Altcar Training Camp in Liverpool for the place called "Erstwhile."

The character Vivienne Rook shares her name with a journalist from an episode of Doctor Who, "The Sound of Drums," another character created by Davies.

The series earned three nominations at the 10th Critics' Choice Television Awards: Best Limited Series, Best Supporting Actor for Russell Tovey and Best Supporting Actress for Emma Thompson.

Davies said he had spent nearly two decades trying to write this series, a project the BBC announced in June 2018 with Davies as writer.

Filming began in Manchester on October 22, 2018 and wrapped on March 17, 2019, with Simon Cellan Jones directing the first four episodes and Lisa Mulcahy directing the last two.

At the 2019 RTS North West Awards, the series won Best Drama, while Rory Kinnear and Jessica Hynes received acting awards.

Russell Tovey said Maxim Baldry was 22 years old when filming began and that their composure during the work together surprised them.
