Emma Thompson learned to handle failure on the stages of damp London venues. Before stepping onto a red carpet, she performed comedy routines in bars where audiences threw glasses if a joke didn't land on time. She went to Cambridge to study English literature and ended up writing gags with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie in the Footlights university group.

In 1987, British television gave her room with the series Tutti Frutti and Fortunes of War. On that shoot, she met Kenneth Branagh. The two formed a creative partnership that filled theaters and stages with stage adaptations developed at a frantic pace.

Nobody took her seriously as a dramatic actress.

But James Ivory broke that pattern when he cast her in Howards End in 1992. The studio executives wanted an American name with box-office pull to pair with Anthony Hopkins. Thompson won over the auditions with pure restraint, and took home the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role while charging a modest fee.

The following year, she earned a double nomination for The Remains of the Day and In the Name of the Father. Few actors in the film industry had competed at the same ceremony in both the lead and supporting categories.

Five Years of Handwriting

In the early nineties, the actress always carried a thick black-bound notebook in her bag. During filming breaks, she adapted Jane Austen's nineteenth-century prose with a fountain pen. That manuscript took five years to complete.

When Ang Lee agreed to direct Sense and Sensibility in 1995, the clash of methods was obvious. The Taiwanese filmmaker demanded absolute physical restraint, while Thompson rewrote dialogue on paper napkins during lunch breaks.

The final script kept the novel's original sharpness without falling into stale melodrama. The film grossed more than $130 million at the box office, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave her the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

And the gamble paid off.

Latex prosthetics and survival assignments

When she turned forty, the industry tried to push her toward supporting roles as a long-suffering mother or a kindly confidante. Thompson sidestepped that routine by working with Mike Nichols on television projects that demanded obvious physical strain.

To film Wit in 2001, she shaved her head completely and studied with oncologists the destructive progress of ovarian cancer. Two years later, she appeared in the miniseries Angels in America, playing three different characters under latex makeup.

But independent projects didn't pay the everyday bills. So Thompson agreed to join major franchises to secure her financial independence.

She put on the oversized glasses of Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter franchise and created a grotesque governess in Nanny McPhee in 2005. She wrote the screenplay for that children's film herself over nine years to avoid interference from British studio executives.

Full Frontal Nudity at Sixty-Three

In 2022, director Sophie Hyde offered her a shoot confined to a hotel room with only two actors. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande depicted the intimate encounter between a widowed teacher and a young sex worker.

There was no makeup to hide her age.

In the film's final shot, Thompson shed her bathrobe in front of a mirror with no lighting tricks or digital retouching. She filmed that scene completely nude at age sixty-three after rehearsing body positions in underwear alongside her co-star.

In 2022, she also agreed to don the prosthetic costume of Agatha Trunchbull for the musical Matilda the Musical, based on Roald Dahl's book. Three hours a day in facial prosthetics and three-kilogram military boots defined that shoot at the London studios.

In 2025, she returned to the role of Dr. Rawlings in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy and headlined the cast of the thriller series Down Cemetery Road for Apple TV+. In 2026, she filmed the detective comedy The Sheep Detectives in New Zealand.

For that country-set production, the costume department made four identical coats from treated wool to withstand the rainy days and constant mud on set.

Quotes by Emma Thompson

  • Unfortunately sometimes I have to fly, but I don't fly nearly as much as I did, because of my carbon footprint, and I plant a lot of trees. [Interviewer: Do you fly economy, to... reduce your carbon footprint?] I bloody don't, no!
  • P.S. Managed to avoid the hoyden Emily Thompkinson, who has purloined my creation and added things of her own. Nefarious Creature!
  • I don't really know how to thank the Academy for this. And if I try we'll be here till Christmas. So I better get on...
  • Before I came, I went to visit Jane Austen's grave in Winchester Cathedral to pay my respects, you know, and tell her about the grosses. [Laughter] I don't know how she would react to an evening like this, but I do hope -- I do hope she knows how big she is in Uruguay.
