Michelle Yeoh wanted to be a classical ballerina in London. A back injury at the Royal Academy of Dance ended that plan at age 20 and forced her to return to Malaysia. Her mother entered her in the Miss Malaysia pageant in 1983 without telling her. She won the crown. That was the first step for a woman who never intended to kick her way in front of a camera.
In 1984, she shot a watch commercial with Jackie Chan. The producers at D&B Films noticed her and offered her a contract to shoot in Hong Kong. Her first role in The Owl vs Bombo was the damsel in distress. But Yeoh got bored on set watching the stunt performers work. She decided she would rather train eight hours a day in the gym with the stunt team than wait in her trailer.
In 1985, she starred in Yes, Madam! and audiences were amazed by her moves. She had no formal martial arts training, but she used her ballet discipline to choreograph the fights. She performed her own stunts and soon earned the respect of an industry dominated by men. In that action cinema, the punches were real and protective gear was nowhere to be seen.
And the gamble paid off.
She married producer Dickson Poon in 1988 and decided to leave film to start a family. The marriage lasted three years. After the divorce, she returned to the screen in 1992 with Police Story 3: Supercop. In one scene, she jumped a motorcycle over a moving train. Jackie Chan asked her to stop taking such crazy risks because she was making him look bad.
In 1997, the Western world discovered her thanks to Tomorrow Never Dies. Pierce Brosnan said she was the first Bond woman who could be considered an equal in combat. Hollywood tried to typecast her in secondary roles as a fragile Asian woman. Yeoh spent almost two years turning down mediocre scripts until Ang Lee called her for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000.
But the body has memory.
During the filming of Ang Lee, she tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. She had to travel to the United States for surgery and returned to the set to finish her fight scenes wearing an orthopedic knee brace hidden under her robes. The film grossed $213 million worldwide. From there, her career moved between big-budget productions and auteur dramas.
In 2011, she played Aung San Suu Kyi in The Lady. For this role, she studied hundreds of hours of video and learned Burmese. Critics praised her ability to carry the dramatic weight without throwing a single punch. Years of supporting roles followed in franchises such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017, or in the series Star Trek: Discovery, where she brought Captain Philippa Georgiou to life.
Nobody expected her to come back with such force.
In 2022, she starred in Everything Everywhere All at Once after Jackie Chan turned down the lead role. The directors changed the protagonist's gender, and Yeoh accepted the challenge of playing Evelyn Wang. It was a production with a budget of 14 million dollars that went on to win seven Oscars in 2023. She took home the Best Actress award at age 60.
In 2024, she took part in the film adaptation of the musical Wicked, playing Madame Morrible. Filming took place at Sky Studios Elstree in the United Kingdom. She also signed on to return to the sci-fi universe with the feature film Star Trek: Section 31. Principal photography for that film wrapped in Toronto in March 2024.
James Cameron recruited her for the Avatar sequels, which are scheduled to be released in stages through 2031. Yeoh plays scientist Dr. Karina Mogue in a digital motion-capture setting. The production contract for these installments was managed under a global budget exceeding $1000 million per block of films.
