Maggie Cheung arrived in Hong Kong in 1982 with a suitcase and an advertising contract lined up. She had studied in the United Kingdom, and her look fit the aesthetic of the era. In 1983 she placed second in the Miss Hong Kong pageant.
That success earned her a contract with the TVB network. But her real film debut came on the big screen alongside Jackie Chan in Police Story in 1985. Audiences saw her as a pretty face who screamed a lot and ran very little on screen.
She made more than twenty films in barely five years to capitalize on her youthful image. The industry treated her as a decorative object in action comedies. In Hong Kong during the 1980s, production speed mattered more than the depth of the scripts.
Film was no longer enough.
In 1988, she shot As Tears Go By under the direction of an almost unknown director. Wong Kar-wai asked her to stop acting and simply feel the scene. So Maggie Cheung set out to strip her style of all the television mannerisms she had picked up.
That shoot broke her commercial trajectory. Then came international awards, such as the Silver Bear in Berlin for Center Stage in 1991. Playing the actress Ruan Lingyu forced her to study the body language of silent cinema for months.
But her mass recognition outside Asia came with In the Mood for Love in 2000. The twenty-six dresses she wears in the film became a key narrative element. Her performance relied on silence and absolute control of her body in front of Christopher Doyle's camera.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2004, she won the Best Actress award at Cannes for Clean. In the film, she played a mother trying to win back her son while pursuing a music career in Paris. Ironically, that fiction became her immediate professional reality after the festival.
After that success, she chose to step away from the major Hong Kong studios. She turned down roles in Hollywood blockbusters to focus on video editing and composition. In 2010, she made a brief appearance in Ten Thousand Waves, the installation by artist Isaac Julien.
She tried to launch a career as a rock singer and debuted at the Strawberry Music Festival in Shanghai in 2014. Critics were harsh about her low, at times off-key voice. But she didn't seem to care much about the judgment of the mass audience or the specialized press.
Maggie Cheung has been out of the commercial spotlight for two decades. In 2023 she collaborated on a visual project for a cosmetics brand, where she personally supervised the final edit. The contract included a clause giving her full control over the raw footage and image post-production.
