Annabelle Wallis spent much of her childhood in Portugal. She studied at international schools and got used to switching registers of language long before she ever considered becoming an actress. That adaptability has defined her career from the start.
She speaks four languages with astonishing ease.
In 2005, she made her film debut in a Bollywood production titled Dil Jo Bhi Kahey…, for which she had to learn her lines phonetically. It was a strange trial by fire for a young actress born in Oxford. Still, the experience taught her that the industry has no fixed borders.
In 2009, she landed the role of Jane Seymour in the series The Tudors after Anita Briem left the part. It was not an easy replacement, since audiences were already used to another face. Wallis brought a different kind of calm that won over the producers and opened the door to top-tier British productions.
The year 2013 marked a turning point with the premiere of Peaky Blinders. Her performance as Grace Burgess (the undercover spy who ends up falling for Tommy Shelby) gave her a global visibility she had not experienced until then. Her chemistry with Cillian Murphy was the driving force of the early seasons.
It was a risky decision.
Her departure from the series in 2016 left a void that fans still discuss on specialized forums. But she needed to explore other kinds of roles outside British television. By 2014, she had already starred in Annabelle (a horror film with a budget of $6.5 million) that grossed more than $250 million worldwide.
Horror became her financial safe haven and her launchpad into the major leagues of Los Angeles studios. That is how she landed the contract to work with Tom Cruise.
In 2017, she appeared in The Mummy. The film received scathing reviews and failed to live up to expectations of launching a monster cinematic universe. Wallis weathered the professional fallout, keeping her status intact despite the project's poor overall reviews.
Hollywood doesn't always forgive a box office stumble.
In 2021, she worked with James Wan on Malignant. It was a physically exhausting shoot, with complex action scenes and uncomfortable prosthetics during twelve-hour days. Wallis decided that genre films were where she could explore more extreme, less one-dimensional characters than the ones from her early days.
Her ability to perform stunts with almost no stunt doubles has earned her the respect of stunt coordinators in London and California. In 2021, she also appeared in the dark comedy Silent Night alongside Keira Knightley (an independent project that stood apart from massive visual effects).
Wallis keeps a low profile in the celebrity press. She prefers that people talk about her professional choices rather than her private life (she had a relationship with Chris Pine that ended discreetly in 2022). Her approach is that of a technical craftswoman who sees filmmaking as a precise trade.
In 2025, she filmed Mercy alongside Chris Pratt, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, with a production budget of over $55 million.
