Chris Pine didn't want to be an actor. He grew up in a family where scripts and filming were part of everyday life, but he was looking for something else. His father, Robert Pine, worked on the series CHiPs, and his mother, Gwynne Gilford, was also in the industry. The pressure to follow the path that had been laid out was constant.
In the end, good genes won out.
Pine started out in theater before moving on to television. His first major role came in 2004 with The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. He played the leading man opposite Anne Hathaway, and Hollywood quickly pigeonholed him. He was the blond, blue-eyed guy perfect for filling the gaps in big-budget romantic comedies.
But Pine had a different rhythm and wanted something grittier. In 2006, he shot Smokin' Aces and pushed himself to the limit, even contorting his jaw to break his prince-charming image. He wasn't interested in being just a pretty face on a teen movie poster.
In 2009, he accepted the role of James T. Kirk in the reboot of Star Trek. It was a risky bet, since replacing William Shatner seemed like an impossible task for any young actor. J.J. Abrams was looking for someone with charisma but with a real touch of vulnerability.
And the gamble paid off.
The film grossed $385 million worldwide and pulled the franchise out of its hardcore fan niche. Pine played an arrogant, lost Kirk who connected with a new generation. Despite the massive success, the actor always kept a careful distance from the fame of the red carpet.
He prefers to spend his time in used bookstores or driving classic cars around Los Angeles. That detachment from the traditional star system allowed him to choose projects that other actors at his level would have turned down for fear of commercial failure.
While the other actors named Chris were donning capes and hammers, Pine was looking for stories that smelled of asphalt and dirt. In 2016, he starred in Hell or High Water. It's a neo-Western in which he plays a bank robber in a Texas suffocated by debt.
He worked alongside Jeff Bridges and Ben Foster. Critics noticed that Pine worked best when the budget was low and the script mattered more than the visual effects. In 2017 he agreed to play Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, but he did it as a deluxe supporting player. He had no problem giving up the spotlight to Gal Gadot.
In the film industry, that's not common.
His interest in creative control led him to producing and eventually directing. In 2023, he presented Poolman at the Toronto Film Festival. He wrote the screenplay himself and directed the film in a style reminiscent of the stranger film noir of the 1970s.
Critical reception was devastating. The film barely reached a 22% positive rating on specialized review sites after its release. Pine financed much of the development through his production company, Barry Linen Motion Pictures.
