Ben Foster left high school at sixteen with one idea fixed in his head. He wasn't looking for quick fame or teen magazine covers. He rented a car and drove from Iowa to Los Angeles to make his own way.
It was a kamikaze gamble.
In 1996 he landed a role in the Disney series Flash Forward. Although the show was lightweight, he already showed an intensity that didn't fit the network's tone. But it was in 2003, thanks to his work on Six Feet Under, that the industry began to see him in a different light.
Foster is known for taking realism to its physical limit. To play an addict in Alpha Dog in 2006, he decided to dilate his pupils with eye drops during filming so his gaze would look authentic. It caused him temporary vision problems, but it helped casting directors understand that he is not a conventional actor.
In 2007 he played Charlie Prince in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma. That jacket-wearing outlaw at times overshadowed the film's top-billed stars. Critics praised his ability to seem dangerous without saying a single word.
Audiences wanted to hate him, but they couldn't stop watching him.
Foster has built his career on the fringes of the major studios. He prefers broken characters or men on the verge of collapse. In 2009 he starred in The Messenger, and there he confirmed he could carry a military drama without resorting to cheap shouting.
In 2016 he appeared in Hell or High Water, playing a bank robber with suicidal tendencies. The film was praised for its gritty realism. But Foster chose to switch gears soon after with Leave No Trace in 2018, where he played a war veteran who lives hidden in the woods with his daughter.
For the film The Survivor, shot in 2021, the actor lost 28 kilos to play a boxer who survived the Nazi concentration camps. He then had to regain most of that weight in just a few weeks to shoot the scenes set in the 1950s. For him, the body is a work tool more than an aesthetic asset.
He has never gone after the easy applause of the global box office.
In 2022 he starred in the big-budget Czech production Medieval, playing the warlord Jan Žižka. It was one of his most ambitious projects from a technical standpoint, with a budget of twenty million dollars. The film was shot entirely on location in the Czech Republic to avoid excessive use of digital effects.
In 2023 he finalized his divorce from actress Laura Prepon after five years of marriage. That same year he appeared in the thriller Finestkind, directed by Brian Helgeland. The production was shot mainly at the port of New Bedford in Massachusetts.
