Hilary Swank was living in a car with her mother when she arrived in Los Angeles with $75 in her pocket. She had no connections and no backup plan. She carried only a suitcase and the determination of someone with nothing to lose.
In 1994, she starred in The Next Karate Kid. It was a critical flop, but it gave her access to Hollywood's mainstream circuit. Shortly after, she was hired for Beverly Hills, 90210 with a two-year contract that seemed like her ticket to financial security.
She was fired after four months.
That seemed to be the end of her television career. But that gap in her schedule let her audition for a very low-budget independent production. She cut her hair and lived as a man for weeks to convince director Kimberly Peirce that she was the right person for the role.
Boys Don’t Cry (1999) earned her first Oscar. For that role, she was paid just $3,000. The amount was so low that it didn't even reach the legal minimum for health insurance during the months of filming.
And the gamble paid off.
Swank specialized in roles that demand real physical punishment. To shoot Million Dollar Baby in 2004 under the direction of Clint Eastwood, she trained five hours a day. She gained nine kilos of muscle and contracted a staph infection that nearly forced her into surgery.
She said nothing to the crew so as not to delay production. Silence was her way of protecting the role of Maggie Fitzgerald.
That effort earned her a second Oscar before she turned 30. She joined an exclusive group of actresses that included Vivien Leigh and Luise Rainer. But Hollywood is a strange place for women who don't fit the conventional mold of beauty, and the following years were filled with failed projects such as The Reaping and Amelia.
The industry doesn't forgive silence.
Between 2014 and 2017, the actress disappeared from red carpets. She set aside scripts to care for her father after a lung transplant. It was a personal decision that took her away from major studios at a time of constant change in digital consumption and the rise of streaming platforms.
She returned with more low-key but straightforward projects. In 2022, she led the series Alaska Daily, playing an investigative reporter. It was a bet on realism that she has always handled better than the artifice of action blockbusters.
In 2024, she released Ordinary Angels. The film grossed 19 million dollars in its first month in the United States. It's a mid-budget production that confirms her interest in human dramas based on real events, without the need for big special effects.
The production of her thriller Mother’s Milk ended with a final budget of $15 million after several weeks of filming in New York.
