Rebecca Romijn didn't set out to become an actress. In the nineties, her face was on billboards across Paris and New York as a runway model. But genre cinema rescued her from the fashion world when Bryan Singer was looking for someone capable of enduring grueling aesthetic torture sessions.
Seven hours of makeup a day to be blue.
In 2000, she accepted the role of Mystique in X-Men. She had barely any dialogue. Her performance relied on her body language and a silicone and paint covering that hid nearly her entire body. That production drastically changed her pace of life.
She left photo shoots for Sports Illustrated to climb into film set trailers at three in the morning. The audience responded by making her the most recognizable face of a franchise that was just getting started. Romijn understood before anyone else that looks were only a gateway into the business.
Many critics thought Romijn would be a one-hit wonder. But in 2002, Brian De Palma cast her to star in Femme Fatale. It was a complex erotic thriller in which she played a jewel thief with a double identity.
And the gamble paid off.
Filming in Cannes was tense. De Palma demanded grueling technical precision in every long take. The film divided the specialized press, and it barely earned 16 million dollars against a budget of 35 million. It was a hard blow to her status as a commercial movie star.
Box office doesn't always forgive.
After the setback of Rollerball in 2002, she decided to diversify her bets. In 2004, she appeared in The Punisher and soon after moved to television. Her role as Alexis Meade in Ugly Betty during 2007 marked a necessary change of pace to move away from purely physical roles.
It was a smart move. On television, she found the stability that big studio films had denied her. Between 2014 and 2018, she starred in The Librarians as Eve Baird. But her return to the mainstream came in the uniform of the starship fleet.
In 2019, she joined the Star Trek: Discovery universe to bring Number One to life. Her performance won over fans so much that the studio launched Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in 2022 with her as the lead.
Filming the third season in Toronto during 2024 confirmed that her presence in science fiction is a safe bet for Paramount. She signed exclusivity contracts that tied her to the franchise for years. Her schedule was built around this long-running project.
In 2026, she remains involved in producing content for digital platforms while running a farm in California. Production costs for her latest series exceed 7 million dollars per episode.
