Jerry O'Connell debuted at age twelve in Stand by Me, and almost nobody in Hollywood bet on him lasting. That overweight kid searching for a corpse alongside River Phoenix looked like another potential burnout. But the young man from Manhattan had different plans from most child stars.
After the success of 1986, he decided education was a priority and enrolled at New York University to study film. He didn't want to be a video store footnote and soon realized that technical knowledge would give him an edge over his generation's peers.
And the gamble paid off.
In the mid-nineties, he returned to the screen with a radical physical transformation that left the industry baffled. In 1995, he led the cast of Sliders, playing a physics genius who traveled through parallel dimensions. The series ran for five seasons and made him a familiar face in households across half the world.
During that period, he appeared in Jerry Maguire (1996), playing the promising quarterback Frank Cushman. Working alongside Tom Cruise was a technical lesson in handling pressure on high-level productions. So he began balancing mainstream films with darker genre projects.
In 1997, he joined the cast of Scream 2. Wes Craven was looking for charismatic actors for a sequel that had to outdo the original in budget and pacing. O'Connell played the lead's boyfriend and efficiently delivered the role of the suspect. The film grossed 172 million dollars worldwide.
The industry stopped seeing him as a kid.
In 2001, he landed in the forensic drama Crossing Jordan. For six years he played Detective Woody Hoyt and built a natural chemistry with Jill Hennessy that kept viewers loyal every week. That job gave him financial stability, which let him explore his side as a screenwriter on smaller films like First Daughter (2004).
He married actress Rebecca Romijn in 2007. That personal milestone coincided with a phase of professional searching, when he even tried his luck at law school in Los Angeles. But acting weighed more heavily, and he left law books after his first year to return to comedy and action shoots.
Because the actor always preferred steady work to the empty prestige of awards. In 2020, he joined the animated universe of Star Trek: Lower Decks, voicing Commander Jack Ransom. This comedic, rowdy register opened the door to hosting television on a large scale.
In 2021, he became the permanent male co-host of the CBS show The Talk. His gift for improvisation and lack of ego kept him in the role for the following seasons without causing friction with the rest of the team. He's a natural survivor who sees entertainment as a day job.
In 2023, his television contract set a salary of two million dollars a year for his work in front of the cameras on the morning show.
