Daniel Kwan was born in Westborough in 1988. He grew up in a family with roots in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and that helps explain some of the restless energy in his films. At Emerson College in Boston, he met Daniel Scheinert. The two shared an unusual obsession with absurd humor and handmade visual effects.
In 2011, they started shooting music videos that no one else dared to produce. Their massive breakthrough came with the video for Turn Down for What by DJ Snake and Lil Jon. That piece racked up more than a billion views across digital platforms. The industry saw in Kwan a director capable of turning the grotesque into something magnetic.
But he didn't want to stay in music.
Because his true obsession was large-format cinema shot on guerrilla budgets. Kwan always argued that visual information overload is the only honest way to portray modern life. So he began writing stories where the ridiculous coexisted with the existential.
In 2016, he premiered his first feature film, titled Swiss Army Man, at the Sundance Film Festival. The premise was a corpse that farted and served as a raft for a castaway. Part of the audience walked out during the premiere. But critics ended up won over by a film that explored loneliness from a radical perspective.
It was a suicidal bet.
Kwan personally oversaw much of the digital effects work from his own computer. He didn't want a big post-production company cleaning up the grit in his images. In 2019, he worked on the series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, where he perfected his touch for comedy about misfits.
In 2022, Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered under the A24 studio label. The film cost just 25 million dollars and ended up grossing 143 million dollars in theaters around the world. It was a phenomenon nobody in Hollywood boardrooms saw coming.
And the industry was left speechless.
Kwan took home three Oscars at the 2023 ceremony, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. He became the director who brought audiences back to theaters without relying on superheroes whose capes had lost their shine. His frantic editing style is already studied in film schools for its ability to hold the attention of a generation glued to their phones.
Following his awards success, he signed a five-year exclusive deal with Universal Pictures. In 2024, he directed an episode of the series Skeleton Crew for the Star Wars franchise. His name now appears on lists of the creators with the most decision-making power in the American studio system.
Kwan lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son. He still edits much of his work on home equipment so he doesn't lose control over the rhythm of his shots. His next project has a budget ten times larger than his early independent film efforts. The deal with Universal expires in 2027.
