Synopsis of Hogan's Heroes

During World War II, Colonel Robert E. Hogan leads a group of Allied prisoners of war in Stalag 13, a German camp in Nazi Germany. Far from giving up, the prisoners have turned the camp into a secret base from which they plan espionage and sabotage operations against the regime. The camp is under the command of Colonel Klink, a clumsy and absent-minded commandant who misses almost everything. Hogan and his men must keep up their fight without their captors suspecting what is happening right under their noses. The series, created by Bernard Fein and Albert S. Ruddy, aired on CBS and stars Bob Crane as Hogan. Its humor comes from the contrast between the prisoners' audacity and the incompetence of those guarding them.

Trivia about Hogan's Heroes

To decide whether it needed a laugh track, the network tested the pilot in two versions before test audiences. The version without a laugh track performed worse, so it aired with one.
The drum riff in the opening theme is played by Bob Crane, who had started out as a drummer. It's the same one that appears on the soundtrack of The Longest Day (1962).
The series is set in the middle of a German winter, but it was filmed in Southern California, where it was hot. The actors wore winter coats and pretended to be cold.
Hogan's Heroes won two Emmy Awards out of twelve nominations, and both went to Werner Klemperer for his supporting actor performance in a comedy.
KirchGruppe bought the broadcasting rights in Germany, but didn't air the show for years for fear of offending the public.
After the series ended, the Stalag 13 set remained standing until 1974, when it was destroyed during the filming of a 1975 movie.
"Hogan's Heroes" ended in 1971 on CBS's decision during the "rural purge," despite retaining a respectable audience; the new executives wanted to attract younger viewers because their data showed an aging audience.
The series was controversial for treating World War II with humor, although several of its actors were Jewish; among them, Robert Clary had been held in concentration camps for three years.
