Max Riemelt was born in East Berlin in 1984. He was only five years old when the Berlin Wall fell. He entered show business by accident at age thirteen with a small role on television. He didn't pursue fame through auditions; the camera found him before he had a life plan mapped out.
Instinct outweighed technique.
In 1997, he made his debut in Eine Familie zum Küssen. That was the start of a run of youth roles that culminated in 2001 with Mädchen, Mädchen. German audiences began to recognize his face, but he wanted stories with more political weight and less teenage lightness.
In 2004, the project that defined his career arrived. Dennis Gansel gave him the lead role in Napola. He played a young boxer recruited by the Nazi education system. He won the Best Actor award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival at just twenty years old.
That award allowed him to choose scripts with greater creative freedom.
In 2008, he worked again with Gansel on Die Welle. The film examined the fragility of democracy and became an educational phenomenon across much of Europe. But Riemelt didn't want to be just the handsome guy in German productions. So he began looking for independent film projects such as Im Angesicht des Verbrechens in 2010.
In 2013, he starred in Free Fall. The film explored the forbidden relationship between two police officers and became a cult favorite at international festivals. The budget was small, but its critical impact was devastating.
Lana Wachowski caught the attention of casting directors for Sense8 in 2015. The role of Wolfgang Bogdanow demanded considerable physical effort and a command of English he had not previously used. The series was filmed on location in cities such as Mumbai, Seoul and Reykjavik.
It was a big-budget production.
In 2017, he starred in Berlin Syndrome. The shoot took place in locations in the German capital and at studios in Australia. He played an English teacher who kidnaps a tourist in his apartment. Critics praised his ability to create a constant atmosphere of threat without resorting to shouting.
In 2021, he reunited with the Wachowskis for The Matrix Resurrections, playing Shepherd. The shoot was carried out under strict security measures and global health protocols. For this role, he had to train combat choreography for several weeks in San Francisco.
In 2023, he led the cast of the series Schlafende Hunde. The production had a crew of more than one hundred people and was filmed entirely on location in Berlin during the summer.
