In 1983, Alexandra Maria Lara's family arrived in West Berlin with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Her father, Valentin Platareanu, was a respected actor in Romania who chose to flee Ceausescu's repression in search of a freedom his daughter inherited in the form of discipline. His view was that acting demanded more rigor than natural talent.
She trained at the acting school founded by her parent on German soil. She began working in local television productions in the late nineties, but mass recognition took time to arrive. She was not after the quick fame of teen magazines.
And patience paid off.
In 2004, she played Traudl Junge in Downfall. Her role as Adolf Hitler's secretary in the Berlin bunker brought her immediate international recognition. The film earned an Oscar nomination, and casting directors in London and Los Angeles began calling her repeatedly.
Francis Ford Coppola sent her a personal letter asking her to take part in Youth Without Youth in 2007. The director of El padrino: The Latin Godfather had been impressed by her restrained gaze and her ability to work in several languages without losing naturalness. As a result, the Romanian-German actress became a constant presence on the festival circuit.
In 2007, she shot Control under the direction of Anton Corbijn. On that set, she met British actor Sam Riley (whom she married in 2009), and her career took a decidedly European turn. She appeared in The Reader in 2008, sharing the screen with Kate Winslet in a story about collective German guilt.
Ron Howard called her in 2013 to play Marlene Lauda in Rush. That film about the 1 Formula One season was her most commercial project up to that point. Still, she always preferred to keep one foot in auteur cinema so she wouldn't get trapped in big Hollywood budgets.
The bet on management paid off.
In 2017, she accepted a role in the action film Geostorm alongside Gerard Butler. It was a technical foray into visual-effects cinema that gave her an inside look at how American blockbusters work. Afterward, however, she returned to projects with more dramatic weight in Europe.
In 2022, she was elected president of the Deutsche Filmakademie alongside director Florian Gallenberger. This leadership role kept her partly out of the spotlight, but gave her real influence over her country's film industry. Her term has focused on modernizing the voting process for national awards and promoting diversity in publicly funded productions.
In 2024, she balanced her institutional work with filming the suspense series The Witness. Unlike many actors of her generation, she has never felt the need to move to California to maintain her status. She prefers the stability of Berlin and its proximity to the European centers of decision-making.
Still lives in the German capital.
In 2023, the market share of films produced under her supervision at the Academy reached a total production budget of over fifteen million euros. International distribution contracts for her projects from that period were closed with exclusivity clauses for European platforms.
