David Kross wasn't looking to become an actor when Detlev Buck spotted him at a sports center in Bargteheide. He was 15 years old and playing basketball, unaware that the German director was searching for a fresh face for Knallhart. That shoot in 2005 changed his life, though he had no plan for his professional future.
He had no prior acting training.
In his debut, he played a teenager who moves to a rough neighborhood in Berlin. The raw intensity of his performance caught the attention of the European film industry and opened doors to projects beyond his home country. But his real breakthrough came three years later under Stephen Daldry's direction.
In 2008 the contract arrived that took him out of Germany for good. The role of Michael Berg in The Reader demanded an unusual dramatic weight for someone his age. He had to learn English at a rapid pace to work alongside Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes in a story about guilt and the Nazi past.
Language was the first big hurdle.
Before filming, he spent months studying phonetics so his accent wouldn't sound off in a production of that scale. The film grossed more than $100 million worldwide and put him on the radar of major American studios. Kross handled the pressure with a calm that surprised his castmates.
Steven Spielberg was cast in War Horse in 2011. In this film, he played a German soldier during World War I. Kross never moved to Hollywood permanently, preferring to keep a firm foothold in the cinema of his native country.
And the gamble paid off.
He alternated big productions with smaller titles where the script mattered more than the budget. In 2018, he starred in Balloon, a story about a real escape from East Germany by hot air balloon. The film sold more than one million tickets in German cinemas alone during its first weeks on screen.
That same year, he worked on The Keeper, where he played goalkeeper Bert Trautmann. It was a physically demanding shoot that required intense training between the posts. European critics praised his ability to carry complex biopics without falling into a cheap imitation of the real person.
In 2021, he moved into survival thriller territory with Prey. This streaming platform production followed a group of friends hunted through a forest. It was a necessary change of pace that helped him move away from the period dramas that had defined his early career.
He appeared in The Last Front in 2024, a war drama set once again during the Great War. Filming took place mainly in locations in Belgium with a budget of 15 million euros. The production brought together a technical crew from three different countries to recreate the settings of 1914.
