Jannik Schümann was born in Hamburg in 1992 and it didn't take long for him to understand how the entertainment industry worked. At just nine years old, he was already on stage at the Neue Flora Theatre to perform in the musical Oliver Twist. That early experience in 2001 taught him that discipline mattered more than natural talent.
But mass recognition didn't come from singing on stage.
In 2011, he starred in Homevideo, and the impact on German television was immediate. He played a young victim of cyberbullying at a time when the topic was only beginning to spark social debate. That TV movie won the prestigious Rose d'Or and forced casting directors to look beyond his youthful appearance.
Before filming his most complex scenes, Schümann usually studies the silences in the script. He believes that what a character leaves unsaid says far more than their dialogue.
In 2016 he worked under the direction of Jakob M. Erwa in Die Mitte der Welt. This film was a turning point because it pushed him to explore physical and emotional vulnerability in a way he had never tried before. And the gamble paid off.
European audiences began to recognize him as the face of a new generation of German actors who weren't afraid of risky roles. So in 2017 he took on the challenge of Godless Youth. In this dystopian drama, he played a student in a merciless education system where competition was the only law.
It was a big-budget production.
Schümann then decided he wanted to alternate auteur projects with major international productions. In 2020, he took part in Monster Hunter alongside Milla Jovovich. Although his role was supporting, it gave him a close look at the inner workings of a Hollywood blockbuster filmed in South Africa.
The arrival of the series Sisi in 2021 gave him the chance to reinterpret Emperor Franz Joseph I from a less romantic and more political angle. Filming stretched over several months in locations across Latvia and Lithuania. The series drew millions of viewers in more than ten European countries during its first three seasons.
But not all of his career in the 2020s has been historical drama.
In 2024 he led the cast of Disko 76. In this drama, he immersed himself in the dance culture of the 1970s in the city of Bochum. To prepare for the role, he underwent an intensive three-month choreography training program before filming the first sequences on set.
Filming for the fourth season of Sisi was scheduled for summer 2024 at the Riga studios, with a technical budget exceeding six million euros per block of episodes.
