Lena Klenke did not seek refuge in traditional acting schools before stepping in front of a professional camera. At thirteen she was already working under Baran bo Odar in Das letzte Schweigen. It was a raw, direct debut in which she played a young murder victim.
There were no elite schools or patrons in her first steps.
That experience in 2010 shaped her view of the craft as something physical and not much given to ornamentation. For Klenke, acting was never about personal showmanship but about fitting into the machinery of the story. And that Berlin restraint became her best working tool.
In 2013, she appeared in Fack ju Göhte, a comedy that broke box office records in Germany. But she chose not to settle into easy commercial cinema. She balanced mass-market projects with independent shoots where the script demanded a maturity beyond her actual age.
Her name truly broke out beyond German borders in 2018 with Das schweigende Klassenzimmer. In this film about student resistance in East Germany, she proved she could carry a historical drama without sliding into melodrama. European critics noticed her ability to convey tension with just her eyes.
So the leap to global platforms was the logical next step in her career. In 2019, How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) premiered, and her role as Lisa Novak brought her massive visibility. The series reached millions of homes and made her a generational icon without her having to give up her restrained style.
And the gamble paid off.
Her character on the Netflix series was not the typical love interest of the lead. Klenke built an ambitious and at times selfish Lisa who moved away from the female archetypes common in teen fiction. During the three seasons aired between 2019 and 2021, she kept a steady balance between vulnerability and technical coolness.
Despite her international success, Klenke always kept one foot in German auteur cinema. In 2020, she starred in Kokon, a film that explores sexual and personal awakening during a sweltering summer in Berlin. It was shot with natural light and a commitment to gritty realism that contrasted with her more polished earlier work.
But the global market kept knocking on her door with projects of greater technical scale. In 2022, she took on the role of Charlotte in The Empress, a production that demanded elaborate costumes and strict protocol. The shoot for this historical series involved months of preparation on location in Bavaria to recreate the Austrian court of the 19th century.
In 2024 she joined the cast of Hagen, a dark reinterpretation of the legend of the Nibelungs. This production was designed simultaneously as a theatrical feature film and as a six-episode television series. Filming of Hagen in 2024 was one of the largest logistical operations in German film industry that decade.
The actress avoids social media as a tool for aggressive self-promotion. She prefers that traces of her work be limited to the credits of the productions she takes part in. The film 8 Seasons, shot in 2024, had a shooting schedule of just 28 days on outdoor locations in Berlin.
