Synopsis of Spartacus

A nameless Thracian serves as an auxiliary in the Roman army, under the orders of legatus Gaius Claudius Glaber, during a campaign against the Getae in the Lower Danube around 72 BC. When the command decides to abandon that war to face Mithridates in Asia Minor, the Thracian sees it as a betrayal of his own people. With his wife, Sura, at his side, he hopes to return home after the campaign. Created by Steven S. DeKnight and aired on Starz, the series follows this man as he tries to survive in a world of power, ambition, and violence. His goal is to protect his people and reclaim what has been taken from him.

Trivia about Spartacus

The first episode set a record for Starz with 553,000 viewers on the channel, plus another 460,000 on Encore, where the show was available only that weekend.

The producers hesitated over whether to move forward without Andy Whitfield, because DeKnight considered it unheard of to recast the lead of a television series.

Starz commissioned a six-episode prequel so Whitfield could receive medical treatment while production of the second season was delayed.

In 2014, Syfy aired an edited version of the series, and between 2016 and 2020 it was available on Netflix.

The spin-off Spartacus: House of Ashur premiered on Starz on December 5, 2025 and was canceled after one season in May 2026.

In 2011, Lucy Lawless won the Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television for her performance in «Spartacus: Blood and Sand».

The series received a nomination at the 2011 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards for stunt coordination, with Allan Poppleton credited for the episode «The Bitter End».
