Erin Cummings arrived in Los Angeles with a journalism degree under her arm and a firm intention never to practice it. For years she juggled commercials and supporting roles in television series until, in 2009, her luck changed overnight.
That year she starred in Bitch Slap, an action film that paid tribute to the exploitation cinema of the 1970s. But it was her entry into the Starz universe that truly put her name on the desks of the industry's most important casting directors.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2010, she played Sura in the first season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Her character was the emotional driving force behind the lead (Andy Whitfield) and demanded a strange mix of fragility and physical toughness. That shoot in New Zealand marked her first major international exposure to a audience of millions.
She quickly moved into police drama with Detroit 1-8-7 that same year. She played Dr. Abbey Ward and proved she could carry a major network production with ease. But the pace of American television is relentless with audiences, and the series was canceled after its first season.
Cummings's career has always had one foot in period drama and the other in gritty realism. In 2010, she joined the cast of Mad Men to bring Candace to life, one of the women orbiting the complex world of Don Draper. It was a brief role, but enough for critics to notice her ability to command silence.
But life had a script in store that she never expected to read. In 2016, she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer just two months after her wedding to actor Tom Degnan. The news put her professional career on hold for a full year while she underwent chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery.
She decided that silence was not an option for her.
She founded the organization Sisters Crush Cancer to raise funds for research into this specific type of tumor. In 2017, she returned to sets with a different mindset and a drive to work that she had not felt as strongly before. For her, acting became a way to regain control over her own body.
In 2015, she took part in The Astronaut Wives Club, playing Marge Slayton. That ABC production allowed her to explore the aesthetics of the 1960s from a female and political perspective. It was one of the rare times critics unanimously agreed that her presence elevated the original material.
The following years were marked by precise appearances in high-budget series. In 2021, she appeared on NCIS, and in 2022 she joined the cast of The Flash to play Joan Williams. She did not pursue long-term contracts (she preferred the freedom to jump between different characters every few months).
In 2024, she appeared in the series The Rookie, playing Maren Abbott. Filming of her episodes wrapped in the first quarter of that year under the direction of Bill Roe. The production devoted 45 million dollars to the logistics of that season, in which Cummings once again proved her effectiveness in police drama.
She finished filming her final scenes in Los Angeles on March 14, 2024.
