The Stigma of the Surname and the Move to London

Jaime Murray was born in London in 1976 into a family name that already carried weight in British television. Her father was Billy Murray. But she chose to study philosophy and psychology at the London School of Economics before setting foot in a drama school.

London felt too small for her very quickly.

In 2004, she landed the role of Stacie Monroe in Hustle. That series about elegant con artists gave her the visibility she needed to cross the Atlantic. Her character was the group's aesthetic mastermind and the show ran for four consecutive seasons.

That British chapter ended when she decided her look was better suited to American genre productions. So she packed her bags and never looked back.

Building the Perfect Villain

American audiences welcomed her in 2007 as Lila West in the second season of Dexter. She played an obsessive, pyromaniac artist whose chilling performance earned high praise in Hollywood.

Nobody expected a British actress to fit so well into Miami noir.

But the risk paid off. That role opened the doors of the major cable networks. Murray was not looking for the girl-next-door part. She wanted characters with rough edges and questionable morals.

In 2010, she joined the cast of Warehouse 13, playing a female version of H.G. Wells. That role built a massive cult following on internet forums. Syfy's audience adored her.

Prosthetic Makeup and Niche Audiences

Her most technically demanding work came in 2013 with Defiance. She played Stahma Tarr, a pale-skinned alien with Shakespearean ambitions. She spent three hours a day in the makeup chair to achieve that ethereal, icy look.

And the gamble paid off.

Murray endured the show's three seasons with a level of physical discipline that amazed the producers. That effort helped her move on to other dark fantasy projects, such as Once Upon a Time in 2016, where she played the Black Fairy.

In 2019, she joined Gotham to bring Nyssa al Ghul to life. She also voiced Carmilla in the animated series Castlevania between 2018 and 2021. Murray married talent agent Bernie Cahill in 2014 and maintains her residence in Los Angeles.
