Kimberley Nixon didn't need years of auditions to win over the BBC. In 2007, the network was looking for a face for Cranford, and she, fresh out of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, landed the role of Sophy Hutton. She acted alongside Judi Dench without missing a beat.
Audiences embraced her right away.
Then came mainstream film. In 2008, she shared the screen with Jessica Biel in Easy Virtue, and that same year she enrolled at the school in Wild Child. Nixon had that clear-eyed look that British cinema loves to exploit when it needs innocence or simmering attitude.
In 2009, she shot Cherrybomb opposite Rupert Grint. It was a raw film about teenagers in Belfast that moved away from the sweet image of her early years. Nixon earned a basic union scale salary, but critics began to take her seriously beyond period dramas.
In 2011, she joined Fresh Meat. Her role as Josie Jones kept her busy for four seasons and gave her a level of visibility that big-budget films rarely offer. But television has its own rhythm, and she chose projects that moved away from pure comedy.
And then the tone changed.
She appeared in Hebburn in 2012 and in the medical series Critical in 2015. For the latter, she had to learn real resuscitation protocols so the operating room scenes would be convincing. As a result, her technique became much more physical and precise.
In 2017, she appeared in Outlander as Millie Nelson. It was a brief but important appearance that kept her on the radar of major international productions before she returned to her roots in Wales.
In 2020, she appeared in The Salisbury Poisonings. It was a tense production about the Novichok nerve agent attack in England. She played Hannah Mitchell in a story that avoided sensationalism and focused on the police and medical procedures.
Two years later, she filmed The Pact for BBC Wales. This suspense series was shot in the industrial landscapes of her homeland and performed well on European streaming platforms. Filming lasted just three months under strict safety measures.
In 2024, she appeared in the series The Way under the direction of Michael Sheen. It tells the story of an imaginary civil war that begins at a Welsh steelworks. Nixon plays Elaine in a plot that blends social realism with touches of political fantasy.
The production of The Way had a tight budget and was filmed entirely on location in Port Talbot.
