Lucy Cohu rarely appears on the covers of fashion magazines. Her territory is pure British television drama and the London stages where she trained in the late eighties. In 2005, she took the risk of playing Princess Margaret in The Queen's Sister.
That performance earned her a BAFTA nomination and the International Emmy for Best Actress. She achieved it by steering clear of royal caricature and focusing on the bitterness of a character trapped by protocol.
But before the awards came a lot of theater.
She studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Her first professional steps were low-key and centered on TV productions such as Casualty or The Bill during the nineties. In 1997, she took part in the adaptation of Rebecca produced by Carlton TV.
Film came through directors like Robert Altman. In 2001, she joined the ensemble cast of Gosford Park, playing Lumsden. It was a key experience because it let her closely observe how major British stars work.
And the pace didn't let up.
In 2007, she shot Becoming Jane alongside Anne Hathaway. There she brought Eliza de Feuillide to life in a film that explored Jane Austen's early years. But her true strength has always been author-driven television.
Because Lucy Cohu understands the rhythm of television better than anyone. In 2008, she starred in Forgiven, playing a woman dealing with sexual abuse within her own family. The role earned her more critical praise for her intensely piercing stare.
With the rise of streaming services, her schedule filled up with global productions. In 2021, she played Diane Roche in the BBC and Netflix miniseries The Serpent. Filming took place in locations in Thailand and the United Kingdom under strict security measures.
In 2022, she joined the cast of the fifth season of The Crown.
Her role as Bobo MacDonald brought her back into the orbit of the Crown. It was a necessary appearance to give context to the private life of Queen Elizabeth II. And that's how she has kept her profile, quietly but without missing a single year of work.
In 2023, she appeared in the series The Serial Killer’s Wife, playing Beth. Shoots for productions like these usually last between three and five months, depending on how complex the locations are. In 2024, she filmed an episode of the third season of Sister Boniface Mysteries titled The Star of the Orient under the direction of Ian Barber.
